Hi Alexander,
I love your perspective! I can tell you are there for your students, and you want nothing but the best for them. I agree with your approach 100%.

Hi Henry,
Students love knowing that they are cared about by all personnel at the institution.

I feel like student advising shouldn't be a once here once there type of thing but more of a constant awareness of students. When teaching I feel it is sometimes easy to tell when certain students are lost and I make general pleas to the class to come for extra help as to not single anyone out. If the student doesn't take advantage I have a quiet conversation with them in the hallway or in lab to let them know more personally where they are in the class and that there are many resources that can get them out of the hole they're in be it from me or any other avenue for help in the school. I also encourage self evaluation as part of advising.

When a school truly have the time to invest in the social and developmental wellbeing of the student to gain future success. I believe it is caring and being committed to the student academic success in addition to all of the other thing that we have stated.

Hi Dennis,
I concur! Students must know that you are warm and caring and that you genuinely care about their success!

Hi Francis,
I have learned over the years that instructors should not sugar coat things with students. The best policy is to shoot straight from the hip with students. Honesty is the best policy.

Patricia Scales

A key component of student advising is to find out what the student's interests are and to not mislead them in their future courses of action. In doing so, the educational institute will service the "customer" and gain/retain a quality reputation.

I find being honest and open to the students as much as I can is key to being effective. Students are very perceptive of those just giving a canned response to them or someone who is actively taking an interest in their learning. I like to make myself available to any of my students regardless of the problem. should it be something with the class or curriculum we can address it or should it be from another source, financial aid, living, work, family etc.. I can direct them in the proper avenues.

The key components to successful advisilng include
understanding and making an attempt to know and understand the student as a unique person. It also involves genuinie empathy as well as good active listening skills. People have a desire to be heard. Honesty and trust are other key components of successful advising. Being accessible and approachable are also key ingredients of successful advising.

Hi Monte,
Listening is key! A lot of our students really depend on us to help them resolve their problems.

Patricia Scales

LIstening to the student and having a trying to problem solve a situation.

Hi John,
It is hard to reprimand, but we have to get the student's attention and teach them for every choice there is a consequence.

Patricia Scales

Todd and Patricia,
It is difficult to reprimand and is best to do in private. If it has to be done in public to control the class it is best to be respectful. As an Instructor and coach here at the school it is difficult to manage the adult learner but we must be fair and consistent. also having an impromptu conversation to get to know the student/customer can always help to be a effective Teacher.

Hi Terry,
I concur! I have witnessed this type of behavior from instructors. Students really do need to know that we genuinely care about them.

Patricia Scales

I agree with this statement. However, I find that if you are firm and fair and show that you do care, but that you expect more from the student, they want to please you and in the end become good students.

Hi Joel,
Every student matters, and we need to do our due diligence as professionals to make sure that each student feels a sense of importance. Remember, students are the reason for our work. They are not an interruption to our work. Students come first!!

Patricia Scales

Hi Karen,
Nicely stated! This is certainly what you would do when you don't know the answer. Students remember what you tell them, and they will hold your feet to the fire.

Patricia Scales

Recognizing each student as and individual, with their own unique circumstances is crucial to successful advising

It is also crucial to keep in mind the objective of achieving goals (ie education/career)

Hello, yes honesty is the best policy -- and in order to respond honestly you need to know school policy, sometimes it is even importatn to direct students to the school handbook when clarifying. If you are unaware of the answer to a student's question do not make something up..tell the student you will get back to them or direct them to the person that is knolwedgable.

Hi Pietro,
Clarity is a must. Students must have director, and some of our students really need direction.
