One of the key components I have found is to follow through. Daily if necessary. This all depends on the students, some just have difficulty knowing what they want. The seek advising and sometimes do not lie what they hear. Following through, or being thorough with them so the picture is clear with a plan in action has worked well.
Hi Luciana,
Absolutely! You are on point! Everyone wants to be heard! Listening is paramount! We as eduators have to be good listeners because we instill this in our students.

Hi Dennis,
I love the three steps you take when it comes to advising students. Listening is key. Students want to feel like they matter, and spending time with them make them feel very special. Planning is always the route to success.

Key elemants of successful student advising in the class room.
Listening to their concerns and questions
Making time to understand and assess each individual's challenges
Formulating a success plan
I believe that it is important to listen. I would say taht this is the greatest component that one should have when advising students. Listen to see what hte studnet wants.
Hi Milton,
Students need to know that we genuinely care about them.

Before advising a student, the student sould know you are sincere and have there best interest in mind.Sometimes a little extra attention to the student will have a positive influance on the out come.
Hi Tony,
I agree! I can tell that you genuiunely care about your students. Students love knowing that you truly care about them. Education is the wrong field if you are not a caring person.

When advising a student an instructor must have true concern about the students problems, motivated to find solutions for his problems, make the student understand that he will do everything he can to help him. Helping students is also rewarding for the Instructor. People that don't care about others should become sheep herders or forest rangers.
Hi Tracy,
You are right! Nicely stated! Students need to know that we genuinely care about them. We have to do all we can for our students to help them become successful.
Patricia Scales
Student advising is most successful when the advisor is able to really focus on the student's needs and goals. The advisor must have a thorough understanding of the policies and procedures of the school, they must be able to communicate effectively, and actively listen.
Students want to be treated fairly and equally, and advising them is no different. We must put ourselves in their shoes and try to look at the obstacles from their perspective. Developing strong interpersonal relationships and showing concern about a student's individual success in their given field of study, can motivate and retain a student straight into success!
They don't care what you know, until they know that you care!
Hi Kevin,
I agree! Management should always support staff. It is nothing like an instructor having their legs cut from under them from management. If the instructor did not handle the situation to my approval, I let the instructor know privately how the situation could have been handled better, but we still go with the instructor's decision.
Patricia Scales
getting through and making the issue or remand stick is hard when they can get mom, dad or management to side with them then you have been overridden and all authority is taken away for the rest of the class with them and for many others. management needs to stay supportive of the staff. overall we have a good team but there have been issues in the past causing the teacher to loose all authority. Talk about a learning lesson we had one there.
I find a quiet talk in the hall and a firm detail of future outcomes if the issue continues is very effective.
Hi Eric,
I agree! May be cliche, but it is true. Listening is paramount!

Hi Sandi,
I love mid-term counseling. Some students will really kick it in gear if they need to after being spoken to. It is a good check point for students. They still have an opportunity to be successful.

Hi John,
Honesty is the best policy. We do not need to sugar coat things with our students. We need to be honest and shoot straight from the hip with them. The real world is not sugar coated.
Patricia Scales
Being open and honest with our students is one of the most important ways to gain trust and belief in making there education as a way to get to there future goals. I also keep there interest by having open conversations of what they are currently working with , that relate to what we are learning. When the whole class hears of how things are closely related to our subject, they are more apt to push themselves to learn more, due to it applying more to themselves.
I also do midpoint advising. It gives students the opportunity to communicate concerns about the course material and it gives me a chance to encourage questions and build confidence.
It may sound like a cliche, but listening is the most important part of advising. Sometimes the students already know what they want or what needs to be done, they just need some affermation. Other times they need true guidence and direction.
Hi Amy,
I love it! Students need to be ensured as to where they stand grade wise. Continue to encourage and motivate your students. Our students need us.
