I set standards for the group on day one with no deviation in what I expect. I will not tolerate them putting someone else in harms way in lab. They know up front what the consequences will be.

Hi Curtis,
As instructors we must do our due diligence to instill in our students the importance of attendance. Students must realize that in the workplace poor attendance is not going to be tolerated.

Most of my advisements are for attendance, so it is not that hard. The student knows how much time they have missed and they know about the attendance policy of the school. The other advisements I do, I take on a case by case basis.

My frame of reference was indeed the class room environement. That is my only interaction with my students is within the classroom.

Hi Bob,
It really begins in the classroom as to how successful a student is going to be. Most students really flourish into pure professionals.

Patricia Scales

I believe that success is achieved through a delicate balance of providing insight that will help motivate and direct students towards resolving their own issues or questions. By combining the practical experience and knowledge of the teacher to a goal oriented curriculum, the students can be motivated to invest in their own success in the class room and gain the confidence to move boldly into the business world.

Hi David,
You have a way of dealing with your students. You are definitely on point. Stay calm, and the student will generally stay calm.

Patricia Scales

I feel when advising students on attitude or grades that you have to be straight forward, as a matter of fact. You cannot sound unsure in your voice. Keep in mind that students typically respond to your level of your response to them. If you are confident and don't make a big deal out of it, they respond in a more positive mannor. The more aggresive you act towards them, the more they get defensive.

Hi Teresa,
Students feel a sense of importance when they are listened to.

Patricia Scales

It seems that active listening leads to successful student advising. However, despite my attempts with one student, she continues to rely on poor study patterns. At the very least, she appears to speak with me in an open manner.

My experience has been that the key component is being an active listener. Adult students come with so many different perspectives and experiences that each truly needs an individual plan and the only way to achieve that and guide them is to get to know them and understand them.

Hi Ivy Joy,
Students need to fully understand why they are being reprimanded to learn anything from the situation.

Patricia Scales

Hi John,
Some students just can't figure it! The need our help to help them resolve things.

Patricia Scales

Hi Jeff,
Listening is key!! Our students need to know that we genuinely care about them.

Patricia Scales

Some key ingriedients to student advising would be showing you care, are willing to help, respecting their opinion and listening.

The structure that works best for me (most of the time), is to start off with where it is I expect the student to be at that point at time. Then, where they actually are at that given point. Even if I have a game plan to bring them up to speed already in place, I discuss the options, and have them actively work a modification to get back on track.
I have found that if I 'guide' them to a resolution, they are more willing and positive to make it happen.

I wanna make sure first that the student understands why they're reprimanded, sometimes they don't know what they are doing eventhough they are adults. I try to approach them in another way without forgetting that they are adults.

Hi Charles,
It is good to know that you welcome questions from your students! If you do not know you have to ask.

Hi Jacob,
Generation Y has to be dealt with in a matter-of-fact way! These students have to know that things are not going to be given to them; they must work for what they want.

Patricia Scales

Hi Steven,
I love your approach! Students need to be dealt with quickly and swiftly!
