Hi Jeffrey,
We have to let our students know that we believe in them, and we expect highly of them!

Patricia Scales

When advising is needed, I perform it in a matter of fact manner. All too often I see instructors taking the action personally. This can often times lead to student/instructor animosity that hinders the learning process. As long as you set forth the class expectations on the first day, there should not be any real issues. When an instance does arise, deal with it like adults, and move on. This can also help prevent large scale interruptions to the learning environment.

I advise policy infractions in a matter of fact way making sure not to let it become a personal attack. Actions equal consequences. I make certain that I offer my assistance to them during the discussion and I always make it a point that they understand i believe them to be better than their actions.

Student advising, when used correctly, can be a tremendous motivational tool. With some students, expecially the gen Y students, you need to reach out and grab thier attention in order to get results out of them, and an advisement can be just the tool to do the trick.

Yes, I treat my adult students with care and consideration. I tell them that this is all for them and is needed for their future. Learn, ask questions, etc.

Hi Glenn,
Students have to keep their eyes on the prize, and realize everything that they do is for their benefit.

Hi Marco,
Listening is key! We have to express to our students that we genuinely care about them.

i advise the students in ways they each will under stand and relize it would help them in the long run, not me

It is all about engaging them and also making sure that we are open to receiving their questions. Communicate well and also connect with listening as well. Thai has certainly helped my students and they usually maintain a high retention for us.

Hi Jeff ,
It is always good for students to feel like they can approach the instructor. I like how you are honest with your students, and you help them keep their eyes on the prize.

Hi David,
A lot of our students need to know that they are to be held accountable for their own actions, and for every choice they make good or bad there is a consequence.

Patricia Scales

our learning institution uses advisments for acedemic, attendance, and behaviour issues. proactivly advising a student helps to get the student on track, i use a clear expectation approch that works well and makes the student responcable for their actions and learning

I always try and let the students know the conciquences of their actions. I have found this to be successful for me in helping and advising students

I try and make sure the students feel comfortable at all times coming to me for help.I explain to them that their goal, the goal of the school and my goal is for them to be prepared for the upcoming job market. By advising the students of their overall performance and relating it to what the future has in store for them helps emencilly.

Hi Lanny,
Some students really just need a little bit more time to gather their thoughts so that they can answer correctly.

Patricia Scales

Listen patiently..... I was asking questions and not giving the student adequate time to reply. When there is a pause it allows the student to "clear his/her plate" as to what they know and there is a sense of satisfaction on their part. Try not to spoil the moment with harsh correction but nudge the speaker toward the correct solution as needed.

Hi Chad,
I play this on a case by case basis. I normally advise/discipline students privately unless the student brings it on themselves for me to have to do this type of action in open forum.

Patricia Scales

Never advise or discipline students while other students are present !

Hi Petya,
I love to build a relationship with my students! Students love knowing that you genuinely care about them.

For me a key for succsessful advising is personal approach to the students. I teach small Gen Ed classes and I am trying to communicate with each one of the students individually because each student has different learning style and goals. My approach has good outcomes at the end of each term.
