Making time for self
One of the biggest mistakes I see in most instructors’ time management is lack of time for self. Our ability to deliver quality can be as good or as bad as the quality we deliver to ourselves. Being a great instructor starts with being great to self and being able to set the example for students to imitate and learn from. I need to make more time for myself so I am not overwhelmed when others have demands of me. When I do not enforce that personal time I become overwhelmed and most times ineffective at tasks.
This is a great refresher for me.
I could not agree more. I find that I need to go for a run or a bike ride to clear my mind. I call them mental health moments.
Sheryl, Wow, sounds like you have incorporated some very healthy habits. Thanks for sharing. Love the idea of taking one night for yourself. I know it probably feels indulgent, but can put you in a much better position to help others.

I have learned juggling motherhood and a job, with this said "mytime" is mandatory. I take one hour a night to walk alone and breath!! I also am a big "to do" list maker. I review my list every morning and reprioritize for the upcoming day. And it changes dailey I promise!! These are just some key ideas that help me.-- Sheryl Kiser
It is hard to take time for myself sometimes, when I am a single Mom & a instructor and sole provider for my home. I try to meditate as I am driving to the school.
Kiofa, Excellent approach Kiofa. At first, this kind of introduction may feel a little selfish. In time however, you'll experience great benefits of putting you first. When you return to your work after "me" time, you'll likely be much more effective and efficient.

Vanessa, Yes, job burn out can easily happen when we push ourselves too hard. Instructors who find a good work - life balance tend to stay in their positions longer and are more productive.

I would definitely like to find some time for myself in the midst of leaving my full time postition and coming to my adjunct position. I have tried it once before and it made a world of difference. Its time to reintroduce "me" time to my schedule.
I agree it is difficult to make time for yourself but it is necessary to avoid job burn out.
Deborah, Yes, it's difficult but not impossible. When we invest the energy for us, even when we feel like we have no time left in the day, it can make a difference.

I am a full time instructor, full time mother and wife, it is just difficult but not impossible to take time out for myself.
Timothy, It sounds like you know yourself really well. That's a great start. Sometimes people get in a funk and it really takes them by surprise because they have no idea where that feeling came from. Sounds like you fully understand the origins as well as how to get in front of them so you're in a better state of mind for most of the time.

I completely agree in needing time for oneself. I find myself becoming unfocused, irritable, and flat out burned out. If there is no "me" time in order to recharge or just get out of my "funk" and start to reappreciate and recognize what it is I am here for teaching can be tough.
