How can you make more time?

After reading the section “Making More Time for You”, identify one item or area that you can improve in that will free up more time.

I my class within the 3rd day, I assign them numbers so instead of alphabetizing the name. I set them in numerical order. Better in making everything organized. Before they go home, I make time within the last few minutes of class to call out the individual student to turn in work that he has accomplished that day. Makes them easier to keep track up and to grade.

I generally look at my e mails in the morning and before i leave this can save time

Yes, for many instructors, this works quite well. When teaching online rather than face-to-face, some instructors find they need to check a little more. But for brick and mortar, twice daily email checks often do the trick.

I agree, having a set time in the morning and afternoon to check e-mails will save time during the day.

Yes, it's a great help for both students and instructors alike. Students get experience with evaluation and thinking critically about their course material. Instructors save time.

Using the class to help grade some of the Labs would be a good help.

It's really helpful to use this system Janet. What's best about it is the way you are far less distracted during the times in between checking email.

This is an interesting approach Michael. Non graded assessments could really work for many of the instructors in this course.

One way I have made more time for me in class was in reviewing non-graded activity assignments with my students. When an assignment is handed out my students are given a due date and I encourage them to complete the assignment in a collaborative group. Certain skills are graded in my course and others are not. Even though we do not grade them they are just as important in their career path. As an example; practical math skills are non-graded in my course and does not affect the students overall grade but are very important to understand and know the proper way to complete the task. I have an answer key available with the correct answer to the math problems and the formula that was used to obtain the correct answer. When they complete their assignments I have them check their answers with mine to see if they came up with the same solutions to the problems. If they have questions or are unsure if they understand how to use the formula I’ll then spend time with them.

This sounds like a great system Brian. It's true that often you do answer the questions by the end of the lecture. By asking students to write their questions down, you keep timing on target.

Checking emails is so time consuming. I try to only check them twice a day first thing and then at lunch. Also answering students questions takes a lot of time as well. I would like to try and save question for the end of lecture and have students write the questions down and we can address them towards the end of lecture. Because I may answer that question during lecture.

Yes, I think this is a great plan Leonardo. We all need our own space to get and stay organized in. For some instructors, it's not possible to claim their own space in that they share resources. Meeting with those who you share with and setting some ground rules about how the space is used can really help.

I think I can make more time by organizing my own space within my classroom and lab. I would like to have copies, training aids, and any other material within reach when I need them. I believe having my own separate space would help me be more efficient.

I get asked to do a course that I do not do all the time and may go into different rooms. I am working on trying to better organize everything I need so I can readily gain access to them. I am also consistently modifying my own electronic grade book to help me work more efficiently.

This is a great strategy if your job demands allow for it Kenneth. Some instructors have to check more often because part of their job is being responsive to students via email during the day.

jim perry just by getting one person responsable for giving me instructions and directions on a job request that 5 people are working on...

jim perry two ways to im[rove time . one is to not try and do every job request a s a p and to please every one make a priority list .and prioritize the list. two is to slow down and make time to do things more efficiently.

Check my e-mail once in the am and again at the end of the day.
