Excel can be a lifesaver

I've recently moved all my grading over to excel spreadsheets, and I took the time to set up an area on the sheets that is filled with formulas that automagically calculate the students final grade based on my preset percentages for homework, tests, etc. Does anyone else do this?

Ecel is definitely a time saver. I use it to make review sheets, as it is quicker to edit and reformat than Word. It is also great for schedules and syllabi.

It is nice to have backup copies Eva. Can save us a headache in the future if we lose track of our digital work. Thanks for bringing up this point. Even when we rely on electronic grading systems, sometimes it's nice to have a printed out file for safe keeping.

Absolutely, it makes calculating grades easy, especially if you need daily, weekly & final grades for many students. I like printing out my spreadsheets & writting in the grades in order to have a hard copy just in case.

Sounds like a great system Robert! Excel is great at helping instructors stay organized and make quick calculations.

I have been using excel for many tasks in the class. I have spreadsheets for every lab workstation that uses a mathematical calculation, so I can quickly check the student's calculations, and advise them of any errors.

That's wonderful John. XL can be so great when it comes to student and classroom organization. When we learn about some of its' more advanced functions, we can really start automating things.

I used an excel spreadsheet to a great extent as an administrator when the students had to have "x" amount of classes in no particular order. The program would say how many classes were left and which classes were left, as long as I was up-to-date on the classes they had completed.

The form was "ready-made," though, and I have yet to make another one for my grading, but I do plan on incorporating it into my grading "tool chest."

I use Excel to enter my feedback on each submission, along with the grade as work is submitted. I then copy that into the gradebook for all students at one time. I keep hearing ideas on using Excel to calculate the final grade but I guess I just haven't taken the opportunity to incorporate that yet. Sounds like I need to get on this :)

Excel is a great way to organize your gradebook. It is so easy to copy and paste formulas for one class to another.

These are all things I have done for a long time. For me they are second nature and habits well established. Even before we started using electronic grade books I developed one for my own use. As it totalled all the grades for me it saved a lot of time in final grade preperation.

I love that function in Excel as well Robert! It's great how adding just a single formula can help you compute many many grades with no extra effort.

Definitely Excel can be a great tool in simplifying the instructor's work.

so long you can generally use the same setting, you can create a structure in the excel where inputing the number of points reach, will calculate directly the grade achieved.

I like excel, as I use it also to record all the comments I might have on the test or the score the student achieved.

Excellent Allen! Sometimes it's helpful to lean on the technical skills of other instructors to get the job done.

Yes I do. Getting help from excel guru Larry has helped me to share student progress without sharing everyones grade with other students, which I thought was a bad thing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Allen

I definitely do this Shawn. Building macros into XL is a great way to automate grading and save time.
