Students Grading Other Students

I love the idea of having the students "grade" the homework of the other students. I think it is a great class exercise and will also save me time. But I have a concern. What do you do about anonymity? Are their names of the homework? Is it okay for the students to know whose homework they are grading? I think we need to protect the identity of the students because it could be embarrassing for people to know if a student writes poorly or got all of the questions wrong. Any suggestions on how to address this?

Having students grade other students can be helpful but the instructor should not let him/herself off the hook. He/she should review what has been done and stress that in doing this that we all teach one another constantly without necessarilty being aware of this reality. This is also true in ther business world and we are ultimately attempting to prepare students for success in that reality.

I personally do not like the idea of having students grade each others work. It is more about how the students feel about other students knowing how they did than it is about integrity. This is not something I use.

Rona, That's an important question. Maintaining anonymity is important, especially with respect to the scenarios you described. I recommend assigning each student a unique code number and asking them to write the code numbers on their papers instead of their names.

I understand why an instructor would use this method but I don't think its a very good practice. Besides the fact that students would see how thier fellow classmates did on the work I think it makes the instructor look lazy. It's like making them do your job for you.
