Stress

I have found that stress from the workplace is a major cause of stress for me. The standards that are set may be in conflict with my personal experience teaching. Some students want to do what they want, when they want to and the instructor does not feel that the administration supports decisions they make in reference to students. It appears that the student is in more control than the instructor. This is stress times ten.

I agree that stress is very negative. I agree with the view that stress has a bad effect on a person’s health and job performance. Our goal should be to eliminate as much stress from our life as possible. That is much easier said than done. I found the “stress list” very interesting. I think that a stress list can help. First you list the items that are causing the stress then you can focus on each item and hopefully come up with solutions that will help lower the stress.

Very true Chis. A lot of our ability to control our situations is dependent upon our outlook and approach.

I believe that if you feel as though you have no control, you are out of control by mere self-profistation. I recomend at looking at what you can control instead of what you cannot control.

Hope your stress surpasses

That sounds really tough Todd! As instructors, it can be nice when we're working in a consistent framework. In new frameworks, where we need to adapt and change, we are often stressed at first. Ideally the changes our management makes will ultimately lead to positive things but I know it's hard at first.

another thing that adds to our stress level is when management changes the way things are done half way through a semester and expects you to adapt before the end of the term. most of the time they never ask for opinions

Most of my stressors come from work, Instructor's not holding the students accountable for thier actions or leaning experience. Next would be management or administration staff not paying attention to the details of there job.

I agree wholeheartedly. This seems to be a common thread lately. Some days it feels as though the instructors are the only people held to standards.

I full-heartedly agree. I find that working out before or after my classes will allow me to ease the stress (along with the weight...my biggest source of stress) but i have to be careful about working out my legs. My tesetorne levels shoot through the roof and i find that it actually makes me more tense and grumpy.

Nice thinking Bruce! Really excited to hear you've found some 'blood pressure challenging hobbies' that work for you. It's also great to know that you are teaching others - including your students - so they can benefit from what you have learned. Wonderful work!

Stress! Stress! Stress! Such is life, eh? One of the best ways I've found to alleviate stress at work, home, classroom, or the like; is to have an active, blood pressure challenging hobby. Perhaps, hitting a heavy bag, taking up Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, running, yoga, or anything and everything that gets the blood pumping and takes your mind off of those stresses are more than beneficial.
I always make mention of this to my students each semester, as I know firsthand how the hospitality industry can and will chew you up and spit you out. In addition, by not having an out so to speak, only sets you up for future burdens and health related issues.

Gale I feel very fortunate to have an administration that supports us instructors and it does decrease the amount of stress we are under at work.

That's a tough sittuation to be in Gale, and so common for instructors today. Having the support of your administration is key to ensuring you are in control of your class.

There are many sources of stress in and out of the workplace. It is how you deal with it that tends to be a determining factor because stressful situations will continually arise. Whether its lack of space, insufficient materials, sharing space, unruly students, traffic, etc. there are many chances to try and cope with whatever comes your way. Breathing techniques and taking time out to enjoy yourself are good ideas.
