Even skeet shooting relieve stress
I have negative and positive ways that I handle stress. However, knowing and realizing the negative ways motivates me to utilize more positive and healthy ways to handle the stress. One positive way I deal with stress if exercise. I truly enjoy taking a long run. I know that if I have a great deal to do that day I also take breaks to just stretch. However, my negative ways of dealing with stress is coffee. By acknowledging this I believe I can change this habit into something more healthy. I also find that taking part in an activity that I enjoy also helps in reducing the stress. For myself this is spending time with my family, or even having friends over for a football game.
Hi Glenda
Sounds great

I agree. I always buy the sugarless gum that shows it is approved by the ADA.
I guess I also like to chew gum, but I am usually alone because I know how some people hate it when they see people chew gum.
There are so many things that you can do when stressed, and I also call friends, which I have heard is good. It does seem to reduce the stress.
Great question Dr. Baarda! Chewing gum is a great stress reliever that I use myself. And if it's sugar-free, some studies show this can be a healthy habit for your teeth as well.
Hi Dr. Read
I love this program since I am very interested in learning about less stress in my life. I loved the ideas in this module. Making a sheet with stresses, etc. and reviewing it.
I love to call friends when I am stressed out :) I also believe in chewing sugar-free gum (what do you think about the gum idea)?
Thanks
Alana (aka Dr. Baarda)
This is a great point Glenda. In these times, the bottom line has become increasingly important for organizations and the center of focus. When our focus is highest quality education, but their focus is number of enrollments, this can cause a stressful conflict.
When the bottom line is the major focus, it is hard to concentrate on what is really important.
It is good to talk to your husband or another friend that also understands. Even if the friend or spouse doesn't understand, it is still good to talk about it.
Since there is no other posting but mine at this time, I will add that I always make certain I take a walk every day with a friend. It clears your mind, and it is nice to get outside to enjoy nature, even when it is bitter cold.
I also call it my stress-relief walk.
These sound like some healthy habits Glenda. It is so important to remember to cover the basics, like making sure you get the right nutrition and are well rested - even in retirement.
It's great to be able to have someone to talk to who is in the same situation as you are. They can really approach your stress from a place of understanding.
I talk about my stressors to my spouse who also teaches at this school. The stressors I cannot eleminate or reduce are things that I have learned to live with. I thing the for profit nature of the school I work for had a great deal of impact on the level of stress experienced by the instructors.
I have been a Weight Watcher since the early 80s. One of the things they teach you is to eat breakfast, lunch and supper. I never miss breakfast, and to me it is the most important meal. I always try to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep. Even though I have retired from my full time job that I had for over 30 years, I still need to get into a routine.
Yes, even as an adult, having a bed time can be a good thing. We have to know our limits and make sure we honor them so as not to get sick or fatigued when we need to be on top of things.
These are all good ideas. One of the things I have learned is to live a balanced life. Make certain you spend time in the following areas: spiritual, family, educational, career, recreational, vocational. It is always good to have a special time each month to spend a day doing something you enjoy doing. It could be gardening in the spring and summer or hiking. In the winter, it could be enjoying playing with your pets and spending a day having a massage and going out to lunch with friends. Just getting away to do something differnt is important.
I really think actually getting enough sleep will help me. Often times even though my body is telling me I need rest, I ignore the signs and continue to work - in order to make deadlines. I think developing a time when I say I need to go to bed - no matter where I am at - will be a good idea!
