Hi Brian,
What an exciting way to get your students involved and interested. Students really feed off of "Real World" applications. The "Real World" applications give students a better understanding of it all.
Patricia
Hi Joshula,
Sometimes understanding your students background really put things in perspective. I like to learn about my students as well.
Patricia
Hi Ricardo,
Applying application to the real world certainly brings about a lot of excitement. Students absolutely live to hear the stories.
Patricia
Hello Joshula,
It is a whole lot going on on the first day of class. It appears that you use the first day to its fullest extent. Continue to cover all bases on the first day.
Patricia
Hi Barry,
I love your explanation. I can see how the students get excited from this speil. I got excited. Continue to keep your students excited.
Patricia
Hi Abundio,
Students love real world experience versus being read to out of a book. Real world experience is a number one attention grabber.
Patricia
Being an adjunct and currently involved in the field of expertise in which I am teaching, I relate "Real World" applications for the material that is covered in the course. For an example, if I am teaching a "Cost Control" course I will relate the importance of collecting and measuring data in order to make more informed decisions.
I like to hear what the students have been doing in their lives, and what has led them to this class. Then I can talk about how this will relate to what they want to accomplish.
Josh
I like to talk about the subject matter in my personal experience in the work place. This I do to give the students a real life perspective of how the class information applies to the real world
The first day of class is an interesting time. It is a time when instructor and students can get to know each other. It is when ice breakers can be used, and learning styles can be tested, along with the flying planes activites. These activities with the syllabus discussion can be an interest building and involved class. The arrangement of the class can be looked at, expectations of students and teacher direction can be given at this time. All this helps to acclimate the students.
Josh
I enter into a discourse with the students about how and why they will use Public Speaking. Then I discuss their final exam, which is the Introductory speech portion of a group interview. I explain that that speech is worth between 50,000 and One Million Dollars.
I then show them how that money adds up and explain that the difference between those numbers is how much more someone could earn with the ability to communicate better and become more successful by learning the techniques of interviewing. I expand that further by explaining that the number one skill in today's tough job market is job hunting and no skill superceeds that, not knife skills or accounting, but job hunting.
This gets them if not excited then at least willing to pay enough attention to learn what they need.
Hi Vivian,
Students do have an automatic interest whenever they can understand how the activities/assignments relate to their career goals. By asking the students what they would like to get out of the course can allow you to get good ideas. I can tell you put your students first. Good job.
Patricia
I used an example of my pass experienced and is always work, the discussion go further than using a page by page on book.
Student asked more question and you can elaborate the discussion toward the goal that student need to absorb on my class.
Real world based example, minimize contradicting yourself in front of student, its walways well absorb and accepted by students.
On the first day of class, I ask the students what they would like to get out of the course. This lets me understand them as individuals and try to tailor the activities and exercises related to the material to what they are interested in.
When I introduce the activities and exercises I explain to them how this is connected to their goals and careers. They become more engaged when they are able to connect their vested interest in the subject matter.
Hi Judy,
Great ways to get students interested an involved. Continue to use these smart tactics so that you can shine as a teacher!
Patricia
Since I teach culinary students, I try to associate all of my examples and stories with the culinary world. Teaching Gen Ed courses can be challenging with culinary students since their main concern is cooking. I try me best to sell my course to them, getting them excited about the text that we use (introducing it as the leading text for the course) and relating how my course would contribute to success in their careers.
Hi Jennifer,
Students love to have examples to go by, and students also love real world examples. Keep up the good work.
Patricia
I show them examples of past works- if the class I'm teaching has them.
I like to give them a lot of real world examples of how the material they are learning is applied in the real world!
Hi Roger,
Nicely said. Excitement in the classroom is definitely a trickle down effect, starting with the instructor first. The instructor needs to set the tone.
Patricia
i find that if I'm exicited about the topic or section that we will be covering that my excitement gets the students fired up about what the class is covering. then i try to point out the relivance of how this will prepair them for the career field that they are training to enter. i think that we are mirrors for the students if the see how we feel then they will reflect it also.
