Regardless of how we keep up with information it is without imperative that it is done. Students are bombarded with information it has to be shown that is is of value to them. As for the most help with in my opinion is motivating in the course they are. Any have the the attitude that "I'm not going to do any of this" a hurdle that must be over come.
That is an area that is challenging for many of us. I have had some opportunities over the years to attend some classes. I also have been able to sit in on classes to compare what other instructors are doing and adapting different techniques to my personality. What may work for one person may not for another. Staying current and relevant in our field of instruction is critical. Reading trade publications in paper and on the internet helps. On line training has been very beneficial.
I work daily to improve the quality of my presentation skills. This would include networking with fellow instructors at our campus and outside of our school. I am looking for ideas and best practices that can be used in the classroom. I also look to cues given by the students and make adjustments to my lecture/lesson during the presentation. I look for feedback from the students. This allows me to judge the effectiveness of the material and how it is delivered. I believe if more instructors networked with their peers they would receive feedback on their delivery skills as well as learn new ideas for delivering material in the classroom.
In order to make sure that you are an IDE, you really must get feedback from your peers as well as your students. I like to discuss the ways that I am delivering the information, and then see how that compares to my fellow instructors. I take best practices from them, and try to incorporate them into my delivery. I then look to my students, and their performances as a guide to the quality of my delivery methods. If students come to me with concerns, I try to listen and may want to adjust my delivery, and I listen if students like my delivery. I also watch their performance and try to make sure that my students are performing to my highest standards. If they are performing well, then the delivery is working, if they are struggling in certain areas, then that gives me something to work on.
I try to talk to other instructors and sit and listen in their class to see how they deliver the material in their class. I als try to give the students some of my background in the field and how the course may help them when they join the workforce. I think instructors new and old need to be open to the fact that everyone has a differant way of teaching. I also think the CEE coerses are a good way to learn how to be a better instructor.
My instructional delivery methods go through constant changes and I try to adapt them with the times and the current student’s personalities that I have. Since the curriculum is mostly standardized the delivery of the material needs to stay interesting and energized in order to lead and engage your students.
I try to give my students examples of how the topic being covered is handled in a live shop. You are taking your students on a journey into the career they are shortly going to embark upon by sharing a story from your work experience or a colleague.
How a tech was able to repair a vehicle or how to handle a customer using this knowledge or maybe the time you had difficulty because you didn't have this knowledge.
I try to keep up on new things that are happening in the field in the course that I teach by researching and reading articles on the internet, talking to people currently in the field to learn what they are seeing so that I can pass this on to my class.
When ever I take a training class I observe how the instructor presents his/her material and the delivery method used. If the delivery method fits my style of teaching I’ll try to use some of their methods when I teach my class.
I think all instructors need encouragement and guidance in maintaining a interesting and energized delivery method.
I have found that there is no expert, only people. I just take the best information from all the possible sources, cee-clubs-courses i've taken, other instructors, and blend them together. My class methods go through changes and adapt with the times and the students before me. The one thing that helps is to be honest with the students and pay attention as you can sometimes see in thier faces "what works".
I also agree that each class is different, i try to constantly gauge how well i am doing by my students reactions and answers to my questions. i occationally find i have a class that is challanging to reach.
I stay current on information from the field as it pertains to the courses I teach. The cee modules help me to adopt different styles and techniques into my classroom everyday. new instructors, need to stay interesting and energized in order to lead and teach.
Keeping up with material in my area is very difficult because of the constant changes that are taking place.By reading new and even old material can help.Taking training courses that are the latest does bring new information that can be taught. In are area trying to keep the information on a level that students can understand and actually accomplish in the time frame allotted would be very helpful.
I believe this is one of the most important challenges instructors face. I try to prepare well so I am comfortable with the material. By being confident in the subject, you deliver as the expert. Discussing with other instructors and finding what works for them, and trying it and evaluating the response you are getting will keep an instructor performing as the IDE.
Looking up the news things in the feild as good. Sometimes I have noticed that students ask questions just to see if you will give them and answer. Or too find out if you do in fact "know everything" I find that it is jsut as valuable when they ask me somthing i dont know or and not familiar with that we find out together. It cant be all about the information some times you need to be able to teach them Hopw to learn
on the weekend i will spend time internet looking up what is new .
i think one thing that instructors for get is the students are working 8 hr and coming to school
Since I teach a course in which information,
parts and procedures can change at a surprising
rate,I attempt to keep as current as possible. In
this way I am able to present the latest info
and help keep student interest. From time to time,
I also review my own method of delivery and and
discuss new course procedures and ideas almost
daily with my fellow instructors. By doing this,
students see that you really care about giving them the most accurate and up to date information.
I believe the way to achieve and maintain sucess as an instructor is to observe and then try various forms of instruction..note the results and furthur explore the ones that work.
To maintain my status as an IDE, it all depends on which class I am teaching. If it is a class that I teach frequently, I spend time on course / industry related websites, talk with other instructors that teach the same course, attend business unit meetings and read trade journals and spend a few minutes in another instructor's class, when ever time permits.
If I am teaching a class that I have not taught for some time, I will again meet with other instructor that teach that course regularly, call and chat with friends at other campuses. Also if available I will attend classes that relate to the subject matter for that course.
As far as areas of improvement, think that keeping to the course lab schedule is the most difficult because some students learn and work alot faster than others.
As stated in this course becoming a IDE is a balance of a SME and IDE. SME is the subject mater being covered and keeping up-to-date as to new types of new products and technology. IDE as I see it is being able to transfer the “how to” to the students that are in class. What I try to do is use issues that students have on there cars or someone they know, this makes the class more interactive and different each course. I would believe that some Instructors would have some opportunity with the IDE part and not the SME.

I keep up on new things that are happening in the field in the course that I teach by Reading magizine. I also do training on new technoagy and talk to people in the fieldand see what they are seeing so that i can pass this on to my class Instructors need help in getting with the right people to get the info that is best to pass on to class
I feel that since I am a new instructor I really have to continue bettering myself on being a Instructional Delivery Expert. I still have recent field information in my head. Eventhough I am fresh out of the field, I still run into situations that come up in my presentations that I dont know the answer to. So to make my delivery better I need to continually expand on my knowledge of the industry which I am presenting. I guess that one would have to continually progress with updates no matter how long you have been an instructor. Being up to date on information will help in delivery.
Seminars and training sections allow me to gain helpful information to keep up with the changes that come about in this field. As students change so does the way or process that we deliver the material to the students.
Ensuring that I am ready and know the material for presentation that day helps to allow me to present to the students in a positive way. This requires that I go over the material and set up the lab and training aids before class in the order I will go over them.
Sitting in another instructor’s class assists me in seeing new ways to deliver a subject to the students.
