No Late Assignments
In the classes that I teach, I do not accept late assignments if they don't hand it in the day they are due the student recieves a zero. I do give grace to those students who have been severely ill and have doctor's documentation to support that.
I have allowed late work in the past but it seemed to allow the students to slack more which made more work for me in the end.
What are your thoughts on my reasonings?
Hi Kelli,
You are on point. You got to the bottom line. If they are given a deadline at work, they will not be allowed to turn it in late.
Patricia
I completely agree with your concept. I do not allow late assignments in my classes either. On the first day of class, I give the assignment and give them six weeks to complete it. Weekly I remind them when it is due, on the syllabi I have it documented when it is due, and the week before, I hand out a reminder. I do allow the students to turn in their project/assignment early. I will give them till the end of the work day to turn it in, however, will not accept anything past that. My reasoning is work related. If they are given a deadline at work, they will not be allowed to turn it in late.
Hi Dixie,
I am inclined to trust as well, but we have to realize there are some dishonest people out there that would look you dead in the eyes and swear by the statement that they are being honest. We must face reality.
Patricia
We do have an honor code, and I hadn't thought about its application to excuses.
Generally, I'm inclined to trust. We have one of those "I swear this is my work" statements that students can put on their cover pages. Just last week a student asked me how important the statement was. I said it's a good reminder of how important our personal integrity is. However, if your name is on it, I assume it's yours. I also assume that anyone who cheated wouldn't scruple about saying he didn't!
Hi Dixie,
What has been your balance thus far? It would take a load off of you if your institution had an honor code.
Patricia
My head agrees totally. My heart, however, tends to bleed with all the (documentable) sob stories. I'm still working on a workable balance!
Hi Anna,
I am sure your students appreciate your flexibility.
Patricia
I have the same policy in my class, except, I allow a "one time only" submittal of late work which recieves a penalty for late work. I do find it effective, and giving the students a little flexibility helps with their moral and motivation in the course.
Hi Peggy,
Your rule has to be NO EXCEPTIONS for this to work effectively.
Patricia
I totally agree with this. You can't make any acceptions for it to work.
Hi Michael,
You have to insist that students rise to higher standards.
Patricia
If it's late you take a zero. Students adjust to it rather quickly, but you have to stick to your guns to make it work.
Michael
Hi Josh,
I understand that poicies can be waived due to extenuating circumstances, such as death, hospitalization, etc.
Patricia
Hi Melissa,
That policy is fine as long as you are standard across the board for all students.
Patricia
Hello Virginia,
As long as you are fair to all, this is all that matters.
Patricia
Hi Todd,
It also keeps students from building knowledge on top of knowledge (learning new things).
Patricia
Hi Tonia,
How nice of you. It is great you have this academic freedom at your institution.
