Motivation

What are some methods to get students motivated about the subject?

Because all students are motivated differently the key is having them involved- and it leads to motivation. Regardless of response- they have to feel included, and some value given to there answer-provided its a serious answer but even a non-serious answer sometimes provides a motivation for that student to continue

I feel like the more excited I am about a subject I'm teaching, the more excited the students tend to be. I try and be really excited about every assignment so that my students tend to be more relaxed and "mirror" my excitement.

Students respond to working in groups and interacting with one another. I have found they become more comfortable with me and other students if I require them to present things in front of the class as a group. This allows each student to have a small part of everyone's learning processes.

Hi Teague,
Students tend to enjoy field trips. Field trips are very interesting whenever they pertain to the lesson. Great idea on the assignment!
Patricia

I arrange a field trip based on the content delivered in the class, ask several questions to be answered in their Power Point presentation w/ visuals. They seem to enjoy the activity and the field trip is planned two weeks before due. This gives them time to bounce their findings off me before the formal (class) presentation. This is the final project for this class.

I usually do an open discuss on life situations and we all begin discuss ups n downs in life and I try to give encouraging words to keep the students........I usually put a word of the day on the board to help motivate and encourgage the student

Hi Dixie,
I understand. Some PowerPoint presentations are simply over killed. There are various rules that should be followed whenever creating PowerPoint presentations.
Patricia

I know exactly what Joe means by "death by PowerPoint"! It's a wonderful tool, but I've suffered through many a presentation by people who put everything on their slides (usually lots on every slide) and read them to us. Equally as frustrating are the presenters who try to use all of PowerPoint's bells and whistles at once--a galloping array of fonts and sizes, movement of text (either whirling too fast or crawling as each letter changes), and overstuffed graphics.

Hi Joe,
What are you referring to when you say endure a day of death by PowerPoint and expect a good outcome?
Patricia

Motivation: This has always been a key factor in how my class is doing in terms of learning. there is nothing worse for a class to have to endure a day of death by power point and expect a good outcome from it.I still remember when I was a technician and sometimes I had to keep things in perspective as to how to deal with customers in a day to day situation . geting there trust was important then and the same should apply for learners too.trying to present an enviourment for them to get motivated in class is sometimes a challenge however I have always looked at that as a challenge worth taking because the reward is all the greater when the feedback one gets from learners is a positive one.

Hello Carriann,
By working in groups and having group presentations, students feel as though they have a support system, and they are not alone. Students tend to appreciate and enjoy group work.

Hello Dee,
How do you think it helps motive the students?
Patricia

I think connecting the material to career advancement helps motivate the students.

Students respond to working in groups and interacting with one another. I have found they become more comfortable with me and other students if I require them to present things in front of the class as a group. This allows each student to have a small part of everyone's learning processes.

Hi Eric,
Students tend to enjoy hands-on activities. They get a sense of accomplishment by performing hands-on activities.
Patricia

Sometimes gettimg them involved by using istruments or anything that is of hands onuse gettin the students to get involved with the stuff at hand.

Hello Amy,
What methods have you tried using to get your students motivated? You need to have visuals and stories so that students fully understand how the subject relates to their career. PowerPoint presentions, graduate speakers, guest speakers, field trips, and current events are great ways to inspire students.
