Hi Carol,
I love it! You put the thinking and justification on the student. some students think clearer when you mention their money.

Hi Paul,
Students love graduate guest speakers/interns. The speakers really shed great light as to what is expected in the real world. Students buy in when they hear what we are teaching them from outsiders is valid.
Patricia Scales
Ask them questions like "How do you think this applies to your chosen career?" Make them think and justify their time and money.
I like to to give examples of real life situations from my career where what I am teaching them has been important. It is useful to give them real examples so they can see how it might impact their careers.
When possible I invite students who have recently graduated or are in an externship program to speak to the class about how important the skills are and how important it is to be engaged.
Hi Robert,
Wow, you have an abundance of experience. Your students are certainly fortunate to have you. I am sure you can share a lot of real-world experience with your students to put things in perspective for them. Experience is certainly the best teacher.

I use real life examples from my 43 years of industry experience to show them how this course has real career applications within the job market.
Hi Scott,
I like to let my students know how the course will benefit them in their career to get buy in from them.
Patricia Scales
I use the "What's In It For Me" approach. If students can physically see, by using measurable examples, how learnig and retaining the course content will benefit them finacially and jump start the career process;they are are sold.
I see how it will help my students and present to higher ups to get knowledge for my students
Hi Tammy,
Super way to gain buy in from schools. They want to know that what they are learning is going to be beneficial.
Patricia Scales
I get buy in from the student by giving them real world example of how the course they are taking will apply in the healthcare industry.
Hi Diane,
Students love hearing stories about things that will take place or took place in the workplace. You can see them really begin to hone in when you tell stories that are applicable to the course content.

Hi Vanessa,
Any time you mention the potential for income, students become really interested.
Patricia Scales
I find to get the students to buy into the course material, I fit in different scenarios or situations that brings to life what could/would occur in the clinic. This helps the students to interact and become more interested in the course material!
Hi Karen,
Wow, it amazes me how some students are so close to graduating, and they still want to only barely do what is expected of them. I was just the opposite, the closer I got to graduation, the more motivated I became. This generation of students needs constant encouragement.

When teaching the adult learder the instructor must help them believe that this program, course etc..is going to benefit them in the job market and in their personal life. I have a DVD that I show at orientation to help the students see what the work environment will be like and we talk about the money they will earn in this profession. I agree with you Brad. The buy in is huge.

I use alot of examples of how they will apply the knowledge when they graduate. I can go over cases I had in practice and how the veterinary technician played a role in those cases. Despite that, I still have alot of trouble getting the students to do the work they need to do, especially as they get toward the end of the program and more and more just want to skim by.
Hi Carol,
Students love it when we make learning apply to the real world.
Patricia Scales
Hi Lauren,
Everyone likes to be listened to. Students love it when they can give their opinions/thoughts and they are valued.
Patricia Scales
I agree, real life examples, especially if you can find some that you know your students will relate to, definitely helps to motivate and get "buy in".
