Homework that is not graded
I assign students homework and unfortunately since these are not graded and students are aware some do not turn it in. Any suggestions?
I always give a grade for homework because students need some incentive to do homework. If they know they will not receive a grade most students will opt not to even attempt the homework. I like the fact that you are using homework to gauge the students understanding. I gauge my students by classwork and quizzes.
I also do not grade homework. Rather, I use it as a measure to determine if the students are "getting it". However, I do record whether homework has been handed in or not and it does count toward a certain percentage of their grade (thereby giving them incentive to do it).
This is exactly what I do! I don't grade the homework but I do check it for completion and it counts as 10% of the students' final grade. I feel that this gives the students more motivation to complete their homework.
Hi Jodi,
Time is of the essence, we have a lot to do as instructors. It is great to know that you do at least give your students credit for having done the homework. Students' time is of the essence as well, and they should be granted some type of credit for doing their assignments.

Although I do not always have time to grade all the homework in detail, I do provide credit for doing the assignment or not. Also, as I teach Communication, I have the students discuss their homework in class as it always has something to do with what we did in the previous class and is a good way to review. For example, when we do our nonverbal class, I have them observe people around them to try to determine what their nonverbals are saying since, being that they are going into the medical profession, we discuss that not all patients will always verbally state what they are thinking.
Hi Martin,
Certainly! Students really want to know and need to know if they are on the right track or not. Homework needs to be checked and students need to be awarded in some way for doing it.

I, also, give homework that is not graded. I have recently decided to collect the homework and give each student some feedback in writing. Even though I explain to them that doing the homework will greatly improve their test scores, I think they still want some kind of acknowledgment from me that not only did they do the work but it is right.
I don't necessarily grade homework. But I make doing the homework part of their grade (10%). I always collect and they either get credit for doing the assignment or they dont'.
Yes, I always grade every assisgnment given. I remember when I was a student that if a teacher assigned an assignment and it wasn't graded I wasn't doing it.
Hi Stacy,
What a great way to encourage students to do their homework and to strive for the best when doing their homework. Super idea! Students have something to work toward.

I give points for all homework, correct answers, to help my student accumulate points, and only give points for correct answers after all it is open book. We do deduct for late or missing work.
Hi Dorothy,
Begin grading your students homework or at the minimum give an effort grade. Your students do not see how they are benefiting from doing the homework. Make homework matter to your students.
