Encouraging a Student to get the tutoring they need
I had a student who would show up for class, but did not always understand what they were doing. When I asked if they understood the answer was always yes but the assignments said otherwise. I tried to encourage them to get outside help from a tutor, but they would not go, they understood the material. How do I get them the help they need?
I understand the frustrations here. Part of the problem is often that it is impossible to give the one-on-one tutoring time to all the students who need it, but it's also tough to get students to independantly get the help they really need.
All you can do is try to convince the student to get help. Try to make it easy for the student to get tutoring. If you have to, go the extra mile and bring the tutor to them.
Hi Jennifer,
All you can do is encourage and offer help, and it sounds like you really put forth great effort in doing so. You may want to say Jim, you and I need to meet at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow so that I can work with you one-on-one with fractions.
