Expectations

Set the tone and the expectations of the course and how to be professional in the classroom.

Hi Jean,
Students need to and want to have their expectations addressed on Day 1. The purpose of the course should be known to students on Day 1 as well.
Patricia

I agree, I always obtain what the student's expectations are of the course on the first day.

I agree and add that knowing your students and their personal struggles helps with expectations as well.

Expectations include that but in my belief also go toward how we are growing as people and how class should be giving us knowledge about the real world.

When we are talking about expectation, it is always from both side.
First day of class, i always give syllabus in which i give all information about course outline, assignment and its due date, late submission policy for home work assignment, attendance policy.
At the same time i always talk with students about their, expectations too. In other words i can say that why are they taking this course and what is their expectation from this course too. It is as important as to know about students expectations from the instructor and from the course too.

Hi Jimmy,
The classroom setting should be as close to the real world as possible whenever it comes to performance, work ethic, and rules.
Patricia

I agree! In culinary school the "golden rule" makes perfect sense. When you're out in the field if your food is late, if it's not up to standards, you become a liability to your employer. That's serious, and I think being strict in the classroom and setting those same standards will help the student in the end.
