Hi Michael,
What a great organization to partnership with. I am sure being a part of this organization is a big selling point for your school to get enrollees to buy in.
Patricia

Hi Diane,
Students are sold once they understand how the course can help them in their career.
Patricia

Hi Raymond,
Students get great comfort out of knowing their instructor has practical experience in the field, and we can also motivate our students if we have been teaching for numerous years. These are great things to share with students to get them to buy in.
Patricia

Hi John,
You are on point when it comes to getting buy in from students. Students want to know how they are going to benefit from the course.
Patricia

I assume "buy in" means motivating students to be interested in and actively engaged in a lesson? The lessons should be fun, involve the students, and practical to their lives.

Engage the students with my 13 years in the field, and contrast it with thier clinical experiences

Reiterate how the course objectives will help them meet their career goals. As a previous professional in the workplace, I also show them how this course material would have helped me in my job and how it can eventually help them in their field.

Hi Channie,
That's right, class participation is not a choice, it is a requirement. As educators we should make it a point to get every student involved in our daily lessons. Great use of resources to get buy in from your students.
Patricia

Not only the students, but the staff. All of our full time instructors worked in the industry full-time for at least 8 years. This convention helps us keep up with the rapidly changing world of radio as well. In the first 35 years of this convention known as the Conclave Learning Conference, our school has awarded in excess of a quarter of million dollars in scholarships to this 501c organization.

Hi Lynn,
Students need to understand how the course will help them in their chosen career. Once students understand the purpose of the course and how beneficial the course is to them, they take a keen interest in the course.
Patricia

Hi Ariel,
Great questions to ask students so that they can see the benefit of the course. Once students determine that a course is useful they will buy into the course.
Patricia

I get the student involved the very first day, because class participation is not an optional it is mandatory. Most of the students like the interactivity process. I also use PowerPoint, DVDs, industry magazines & newsletter’, Internet and life experiences.

Hi Michael,
Wow, your students are very fortunate to be exposed to the best national convention in radio broadcasting. I am sure you have some type of lesson, extra credit, or mandatory requirement when it comes to your students attending this event. What an opportunity for your students!
Patricia

Hi Cheryl,
Showing relevancy as to why the students are taking the course on the very first night is essential. Students need to understand from the beginning how the course pertains to their career.
Patricia

Hi Larry,
The first day is VERY IMPORTANT as to why the students are taking the course. Students need to understand how the course pertains to their career so that they buy into the course.
Patricia

Hi Roy,
When students see the practical side of a course they understand why they should take it, and they become more interested in the course.
Patricia

Hi Kori,
Once they see and fully understand how they can benefit from the course in their career, they are sold.
Patricia

I try to show them how the course material will apply to their field.

I usually teach specific tools of the trade in my classes. I like to start out by asking the class about their career objectives, something like:

"Who here is interested in doing so and so after graduation?"
"Who here wants to become that after graduation?"

Usually these questions are broad enough so by the time i asked 2-3 of them everybody raised their hand at some point.

I then specify how the tool we're going to learn is necessary for each of their chosen paths. Most often it surprises quite a few of them ("Wow I didn't know that that is so important and useful...")

Explain the subject in relation to practicial application. When they have a use and understanding with the information given, I get their acceptance.
