I have students research a article and present it to the class. They need to explain what, where and how the article is relevant to say "Stem cell research. Good icebreaker and can be used in groups.

Hi Caro,
Whenever you make course objectives apply to the real world, students are normally sold on the course.
Patricia

Hi Jennifer,
It is amazing what sharing your passion for the product/profession can do for your students. Your students become excited about the course/product because you are excited.
Patricia

At the start of the course, I help facilitate the students production of their very own class policy. Each person must contribute an idea to promote a positive and healthy learning environment. I write all of the ideas on the board (including some they may have overlooked) and then we go through them and talk about them until we come to a decision to keep or cross it off. This gets the group talking because it is a subject they already know. I bring the same enthusiasm to this event as I do to the course content so that students who have never had me before can see that I am consistant and will listen to their ideas.

I demonstrate an exceptional product pertaining to the course created by a past student and explain how they will be learning the skills to create they're own exceptional product

Depending on the course, it could be sharing personal experiences from the industry, showing them product not on the curiculum so they can see the steps that lead to creating the amazing products etc. Most of all its just about sharing my passion an excitement for the product we are creating. =-)

I normally teach anatomy and physiology to medical assistant and medical billing and coding students. To get buy in from both groups of students, I give examples of how knowledge of the various organ systems can be applied to their future jobs. Medical assistants for example, need to know the location of muscles and other structures to give injections properly.

On the first day of class I tell students they will not only be tested on the material I will present, but that I will also be monitoring and guiding their overall behavior. They get very excited when they realize they are about to start on a path that requires training of both mind and body.

Hi Faye,
Great information to share with students as to why ENG101. I will put this response in a nice PowerPoint presentation and share it with the students on Day 1 before ever going over the syllabus. Students need to understand the why. Be proactive, don't give the students the opportunity to ask why, you beat them to the punch so to speak.
Patricia

Hi Robert,
I concur! Students should try to shine favorably upon their instructors and other school employees because we as instructors recommend them for employment. At my institution the majority of employees on staff graduated from the institution. I even have a few faculty members that graduated from the institution. They entered the institution with a 4 year degree and did extremely well as a student and were hired.
Patricia

Hi Ernest,
Wow, what great information to share with students so that they quickly see how beneficial this course is to them both personally and professionally.
Patricia

I would give examples of how the course materials have adjusted my ways of thinking or doing things in the real working world and then ask them how they see themselves using what they have learned and how they foresee the subjuct matter fitting into their lives

Hi Donna,
I like your approach that you take with students. You appear to put the students first to show them that you have their best interest at heart. I can tell you want your students to be successful.
Patricia

Hi Veronica,
I like how you put part of the responsibility on the students. Students need to learn how to pull their weight.
Patricia

I give the students power by putting my notes and worksheets online and expect them to copy and bring to class.

When they realize that I am willing to put in the work and organized everything for their benefit, they believe I am interested in their success.

A good class atmosphere.
Explain the course from beginning to end so the student can see what they will learn and how it will affect them in a real work environment.
Good material, like power points, class discussions, teamwork games, building the students confidence.
Let the students know from the beginning that questions are welcome and encourgage the students to participate.
Make objectives that students can attain and give praise for the accomplishments
Show confidence in your abilities and that you know the material. Do not try to "bull" the student.

First of course the introduction and course outline. I always shows the example and application of content, which will inspire and motivate students to know about the subject content. And guest speaker will be always a good idea too.

Hi Janet,
It is always a big eye opener whenever you let them know what they will be learning is definitely utilized in the workplace.
Patricia

Hi Songa,
As learners, it becomes more interesting when active learning is taking place, and it becomes even more interesting whenever the students know that these are skills that will be utilized in the workplace.
Patricia

Hi Lynn,
It is a big eye opener for students whenever guest speakers come in and talk about the skills that the students are learning are skills that they use often in the workplace.
