Hi Anthony,
Great list! What useful ways to show how the content relates.
Patricia
1) Having Course/learning Objectives outlining requirements and expectations.
2) Course Outlines showing course structure.
3) Adhering to and enforcing deadline rules for all course works, assignments, tests, etc.
4) Encouraging everyone's participation through group activities.
5) Being a role model through examples - being in control and the expert through preperation.
Students need to personalize the relevancy of the course so that they can then take ownership and become more interested in participating in discussions and finding solutions. I teach Medical Billing and Coding and my students have life experiences in medicine and we bring it all to bear as it applies to the medical field today. A big topic.
Hi David,
If you are pertaining to your medical students receiving various IT certifications, those medical students should have training in the area to help prepare for the exam, and when they feel as though they are ready they can sit for various certifications. Your student services person should be able to assist you in this area.
Patricia
I don't teach IT but health care and IT affects my "brand" of student immensely. How might they acquire these basic levels of competency (certifications) and at what cost?
We discuss what employers look for in a resume
and why a resource specialist might throw out
a resume. Format and "spelling" are the most
common problems. I then ask how many plan to
start their own business. I have several brochures from businesses I have received that I
share with them. They are quick to point out the
grammatical and other errors, and we discuss why
that would be important to a growing business.
They quickly see a connection between money and customers for their business and their use of the
English language.
Hi Erie,
It is always good to be able to show based on the explanation. Students tend to have a better understanding when they can see it as well.
Patricia
Hi Sunethra,
Two great points to emphasize course relevancy. Students become very interested when these things are talked about.
Patricia
One way I show relevancy is to explain to the students how they will need this course to be successful in the field.
1. Give examples of how the course informations is utilized in field.
2. Give examples of questions that could possibily be on their board/certification exam that is presented in the course
I agree with you on this practice Carlos. Students should be aware of examples of clinical application of tasks taught. I lije the idea of tying in the theory with tangible examples of its application.
To show relevancy of course content I pull articles from the news for discussion, select topics from periodicals, journals and other published articles.
Students are very opinionated and often it is enlightening to hear their points of view on topics relevant to the selected course.
We discuss topics like medication Errors, customer service, and law and ethics.
Hi Russell,
Most of our students are very serious about obtaining knowledge and skills so that they can become experts in their chosen fields. We have to continue to motivate and encourage them. Talking about salary is a great motivator.
Patricia
Students goals are to become "experts in their domain" by demonstrating their knowledge and skills in the workplace so that they can reep the reward of a salary and stability for their family and themselves. But to get to that point, the student needs to start point. "To get there, we have to start here".
Hello William,
I believe that encouraging students to earn a beginning level of certification in a particular software product is a good practice in IT. It also serves to encourage and motivate students to continue to do more and gain additional certification.
Hello Instructor Scales,
I show my students the relevancy of the course by relating course topics to 'real world' work situations and events.
Hi Carlos,
It appears that the theory makes sense once examples have been shown.
Patricia
If the students are interested in pursuing a particular vocation they must have examples of the application. When you tie in the theory, it becomes more tangible in terms of cause & effect. Every application has a process so that when the content is illustrated as part of an application it becomes real.

I find it very necessary to first develop a rapport with each adult student. I take mental notes about their 5-year goals and past experiences on day one and use that information to associate and remember their names. It seems impossible to apply blanket relevance for the entire class. As a restaurant production facilitator in culinary arts curricula, I must create a functional team and establish what the course relevance is for each particular student’s desired career path. Then, through guided experiences of common context based cooking and service tasks, each individual adult learner can perceive relevance and value.
