Hi Thomas,
I agree! Students know exactly what is expected of them when examples are shared. Examples add great clarity.

I show examples because It gives the student an idea of what type of work they will be doing and how I expect the work to be done.
Showing students examples of the work they will complete during the class will allow students to: become familiar with the course assignments; recognize acceptable answer formats for assignments; develop individual ideas for their own work.
It gives the student a clearer understanding of what is expected in the course.
Students will know what the instructors expect and they will be motivated to submit work and projects better that the examples shown.
Hi Billy,
Students really can be each other's worse critic. Let's utilize our students as valuable resources.

Most people are visual learners and lots like to see finish product
So do I. I am integrating that into my next courses.
Recently, I read your suggestions, and a student confirmed that it would be helpful. My students in a Freshman Composition read each other's work critically. They gave excellent feedback to the writer of each research paper and put their essay writing skills into practice. Thank you.
It give the student a better understanding of what the course is about. Students really appreciate examples.
The students have a better idea of what is expected. This can give them a guide on how to do the project. This would help them be set up for success.
Examples give the a focus point for the student.
It is helpful to show students examples of the work they will be doing in class in order to show course expectations. Actually showing examples also provides students with visuals from which to go by, instead of just a paragraph statement on a syllabus.
Yes, I have discovered the importance of sharing examples of student work in my classes.
It also shows them your expectations.
It helps students understand what to expect and gets them excited about the content of the course.
Like many other respondents, I think it gives the studnnets an idea of what they can expect. It can also get them excited about the course content and its outputs.
By showing examples to students it helps to relieve student anxiety. Also it makes what is to be learned less abstract. They get a good picture of what it is that they are going to accomplish. It can also help students relate the task at hand to real-world scenarios.
Hi Laura,
Students are generally very grateful whenever examples are shared based on what they are to do. Clarity is gained when students can see what is expected of them.

I have found that in certain classes, for example, Pharmacology I, many students are lost because they are new to the topic. When I give them an assignment that is due the week before the end of the class term, they spend a great deal of time wondering what they need to do. Therefore, I provide a sample of former students' work (with that former students' permission) in hopes of providing a clear pathway to what is important for the students to learn. At this point it is made clear that students are not to copy the example provided and to only use this example as a guideline. The students are thankful that this is provided to them, as the majority of them do not have any medical background.
