I issued an assignment for a career path project for culinary students. All of the criteria were listed, length, proper grammar, punctation, citation and so on. The first one I received was exactly what I was after. I asked the student if I could have an electronic copy of it, scrub all signs of authorship and us it as an example going forward. Fortunately he agreed and I will use this as a template going forward so students can see exactly what I expect from them.
Great idea, showing examples from peers should relieve some stress for most students.
in teaching a techngology course it is important to show students how technolgy could/does inpact learning.
Hi Gordon,
I agree! Students feel better about the task at hand once they have seen an example.

Hi James,
I have found that when you show students an example, they get a better understanding as to what is expected of them.

Hi James,
Visual is everything in education.

Hi Jason,
Examples can serve as a great motivator to students. Some students really take the example and go above and beyond as to what is expected.

Showing examples of previous students work and successes can put at ease a new students nervousness and aprehension, thereby leting him or her concentrate at the new task at hand.
A written project a lab project live shop work
So they have a clear picture of what there expected to do in the course.
I like how it helps with student retention as well as motivates them to look forward to something. In marketing classes especially they start thinking, I can do better than, or wow I can't imagine being that talented at making an ad.
As a past student my self it gave me a organized deadline that I knew had to be completed. Also I knew what we were doing and didn't have any unexpected assignments that were thrown in there. It have me the chance to even go ahead and complete other assignments if I had the main concept of it.
Hi Lisa,
My experience is that most students are proud to have their work used as an example, however I do understand your perpsective.

Hi Tammy,
When students know exactly what is expected of them, the grading period will go well for the students and the instructor.

Assessment is an effective way to evaluate students Mohammed and I agree that it helps students realize their weaknesses.
But, I think that it also helps students discover their strengths. I am a firm believer in searching for positive aspects of each student's work and then praising the student for that strength. By doing this it makes the students feel proud and better about themselves; and the next time they must complete an assignment they will remember the praise they received earlier and will want to "rise to the occasion" and perform well again.
I agree with what you say Edward about students knowing what to expect if they are given examples. I think though that students must be given the opportunity to say they don't want their work shared with a future class.
By the teacher letting the students know that they have a say in how their material will be shared(or not shared)lets the students know that the teacher respects their right to say no. Once a student feels that their classroom is based on mutual respect for each others work and that they have the right to refuse or agree they will feel secure in the knowledge that their work not only matters to them but to the teacher and other students as well.
It is important to give the students an idea of what is to be expected of them. When doing assignments the students will have an example to base their work on.
Adult students need to know what is expected of them, therefore having examples sets concrete expectations of what goals they much reach to complete the course.
To let the student know what to expect and also to take away some of the anxiety about the unknown. Less stress on the student seems to make for a more acceptable learning environment.
Hi Rachel,
As long as the name is removed and you have gotten special permission from the student, you should be fine. What you can do is simply create an example using a student's example as a guide. Present the example you created which is identical to the student's.
