Using guest speaker to motivate unfocused students
The guest speaker is an excellent way to bring unfocused students back into focus. I have asked former students to come in and speak about real world job experiences this helps affirm how our school has prepared them for real world
employment. My students are attentive during this presentation. It seems to help them revive their goals and focus on their objetives.
Hi Matthew,
Guest speakers are no doubt priceless! I have seen when graduate guest speakers add a different level of excitement.
Patricia
The real world application that a professional guest speaker illustrates to a class is invaluable. Regardless of whether or not the speaker is a graduate of the school, the connection that a student makes with success and their potential is what they need. I have seen students on the verge of dropping out completely redeem themselves (academically) after meeting someone who is successful in the field.
We want to use Our Medical Director Who is an MD as a Guest Speaker once a Month. I am looking for Pro,s and cons
Hi Lisa,
Guest speakers are really awesome! They are very inspiring to current students.
Patricia
Guest speakers can make a positive impression on students studying in the same field.
Hi Woody,
What type of reactions did you get from your students based on the guest speaker's presentation?
Patricia
I have used this technique and it has worked well for me also.
I believe that nowadays these new graduates need a lot of resources from the outside world for job connections. It's a tough job market out there.
Hi Dave,
Wow, this response motivated me. I fully understand how your students quickly became engaged. What an awesome story!!! Go Guest Speakers!
Patricia
I was fortunate enough to experience excellent and rather unexpected results from inviting a previous student to address my current class. The day before his visit I had assigned to my class an individual presentation project entitled "Living my Automotive Passion" and sensed a less than enthusiastic response. (Moans & groans). The following day my guest speaker started by relating his experience as one that had originated in my class 22 months earlier when I had assigned a project entitled "Living my Automotive Passion". He now had their full attention. He noted that he had always had a facination for Lamborghini but had never had the opportunity to see one up close and personal. He went to the internet & contacted the president of a local Lambo club who put him in touch with a member who agreed to help him with his school project. After a half day of dissecting & test driving the Murcielago LP640,the owner, impressed with the passion exibited, put my then jobless student in touch with a local exotic race car club who, after two interviews, put him to work wrenching in the pits. After several months of local & international travel he was recruited by an exotic car dealership where his lead crewmember duties net him $180k a year. Motivated by this real-life experience, I am expecting very high marks turned in by my current students. Go Guest Speakers.
Hello Brandon,
What ways do you think a guest speaker causes a student to regain focus?
Patricia
I agree a guest speaker is a good way for the students to become in focus again.
Hi Scott,
To make sure that the guest speaker stays within the scope of things, it is always good to go over the topics you want covered. You do want the visit to be very beneficial to the students. Students enjoy guest speakers. It is good for students to hear someone else's perspective other than the instructor's.
Patricia
Using guest speakers gives real life situations. I will give the guest speaker a couple of points to cover, usually a business case example. Everytime I have used a guest speaker, the class will always will talk about it and give positive feedback.
Hi Russell,
Guest speakers are very motivating. Students enjoy listening to them. It is always good for students to hear that the guest speaker mentions a lot of the same things you said.
Patricia
Guest speakers show the class that they too can acheive their goals. The guest speaker I used had only reciently entered the industery and was doing well. She knew some of the students in the class and they spoke highly of her to the other students. This motivated the unfocused part of the class in the right diection.
Hi Shui,
I love guest speakers, and I have found that my students are very fond of them as well. Guest speakers do a fantastic job of reinforcing various concepts. You can never go wrong with guest speakers. Guest speakers add another exciting component to any course.
Patricia
Guest speskers do have a positive impact on motivating students. When our capstone project
students know that there will be guest speakers in
their presentation they usually put extra time and efforts into their projects. And the students get valuable feedback from interaction with the
guest speakers.
Hi William,
Have you ever invited guest speakers to speak to your students. I've done this and students love it. They get to hear someone else's perspective.
