I actually get to be the guest speaker and I use it to motivate students to strive for excellence using my position as a long term goal to strive for.
Hi Mohammed,
Graduate guest speakers are so inspiring. They give the students great HOPE, and most students can see themselves as being successful, just like the graduate guest speaker.
Patricia
Guest speakers especially if he is a graduate from your course / class or an ex - student is even better and very effective way to inspire most of the student component in your class.
It is easier for the students to relate to some one at the same level as them.
Hi Joe,
Nicely put! Guest speakers put everything in perspective pertaining to the outside world. It is important for our students to understand the connection to the outside world because the outside world is what is realistic.
Patricia
provide a connection to the outside world
Hi Bruce,
I am a firm believer in having guest speakers come in and reinforce what has been talked about. Students tend to truly believe an outside source based on what instructors have told them. You are right, when guest speakers come in, students get really excited, and they really get the "I can do it attitude." I love guest speakers!!
Patricia
I HAVE USED GUEST SPEAKERS AND IT WORKS TO GET THE STUDENT EXCITED,WITH A IF HE CAN DO IT YOU CAN DO IT ATTITUDE.
Hi Warren,
I am a firm believer in having guest speakers come in and reinforce what has been talked about. Having guest speakers create a keen interest in a topic. Students tend to truly believe an outside source based on what instructors have told them. It seems as though whenever the information comes from an outside source students tend to let the additional information act as a validation. The time serves as a great opportunity to pick the guest speaker's brain. You are right, the students are very inquisitive whenever a guest speaker is present. I love guest speakers!! They are truly an inspiration to students.
Patricia
The guest speaker is an excellent way to create interest in a topic. I brought such an individual in on the spur of the moment.I realized how well this can work when I saw the students ask him questions for 45 minutes nonstop
Yes, I do love guest speakers and it's fun to be one somewhere and those students are happy to have their subject matter validated and yet you bring someone else in to your class to validate yours!! It is a good concept.

I used guest speakers in my past teaching position and it did work wonders for motivating students. I am now teaching in a different field and at a college that is just starting this particular program so I cannot draw a guest speaker from a former graduate, but, this forum has made me realize I need to find someone in the community to come and speak with them. I will start brainstorming today!! ( the problem is I drive over 50 miles to the college so my contacts are too far, but, I will start checking the local area for someone and get referrals) Thanks!!!
Hello Joseph,
I feel as though it is most effective to use a guest speaker later in the grading period so that topics you discussed can be reinforced by the guest speaker. On the first Day, you need to focus on selling your students to come back the second day, by introducing the syllabus, class introductions, distributing materials, bonding, etc.
Patricia
would you use a guest speaker at first class or use the tease that there will be one comming later. if you use a speaker at first class are you teaching what they spoke of, or do you use a speaker later to reinforce what was taught?

What also has inspred my students is when I have invited guest speakers to see the students final project presentations and give feedback. The students are encouraged by seeing someone else in the industry show an interest in their work.

You are right, when guest speakers come in, it is a great opportunity for networking. I am all for having students dress professionally when visitors come, and I love the idea of having a list of intelligent questions for the speaker. The time serves as a great opportunity to pick the guest speaker's brain. I love guest speakers!!

We bring guest speakers into all of our classes. I have found that the students get to hear some of the same topics that we have been covering in class from an outside source. We remind the students that we are training them for waht they need to know for their field. Sometimes students feel that we are covering things that they will not be using and it is nice to have someone else lecture the same topics. It also allows the students to meet people in the community so that they can begin their networking skills. We encourage our students to dress professionally for guest speakers and to have a list of intellegent questions to present to the guest speaker.
I teach Accounting. Bringing in a guest speaker, such as a CPA, gives the students an opportunity to meet a professional in their field, get career advice, and hear the good and bad of working as an accountant from a "real" person as opposed to simply reading about it from a textbook.
Hi Linda,
Using a a guest speaker to motivate unfocused students is an excellent educational opportunity. Why do you feel using a guest speaker to motivate unfocused students is an excellent educational oppotunity/how do students benefit from such acitivity? In what ways have you witnessed this activity as being excellent? What other means have you used to motivate unfocused students?
