At the start of each class we go over all assignments thoroughly and usually give a pretest over the information

I find that it is important to follow up on the assignments for the student to feel like the time they spent was worth it. Also they usually feel proud of themselves when they can answer a question from the book during discussion.

the students will come to reolize that there grades will reflect the assignments, and partisipation from the discussion on the readings. and that you as the instructor are serious about the assignments.

I have found that following up with assignments helps the students know that I care as an instructor what they are retaining and what needs more attention during class.

It is important for me as an instructor of an accelerated class that the student be prepared for the day's lesson. The homework usually addresses the subject matter to be covered in the days lecture. Without homework preparation, the student is at a disadvantage.
I am clear from the beginning of class that homework is graded and is 10% of total grade. Late assignments are penalized one letter grade per day of tardiness. Moreover, Pop quizzes on homework often appear at the beginning of lab or class. Further, these Pop quizzes are not available for make up if missed. The homework is collected before each class exam.
This attention to assignments is important because it encourages the student to do the required assignments; thus, the student is better prepared for lecture and post discussion. The class is more engaged as well when all students come prepared.

Hi Daniel,
Absolutely! Students need to be held accountable, and we should be caring and professional enough to check their work.

Hi Daniel,
Students have too much going on to be doing work just for the sake of it.

Hi Melanie,
Look over your lesson plans daily before class and have deadlines jotted down so that you can remember deadlines as well.

Following up with the student assignment is important for several reasons. First it establishes that you consider the material covered in that assignment is important to you and the student's success.

Followup is important to show the students that you take the assignments seriously. Your intentions to go over the assignments on a regular basis should be made clear on the first day of the class. Also, this approach gives more meaning to the assignment when you discuss the material in class.
Another approach is to periodically end the class with a short quiz over the new material presented that day. This quiz could also incorporate material from the assignment.

You stated assignments due dates at the beginning of a course; and gave several reminders. What would you do when a student still turns in an assignment late?

Sometimes it is hard for me to remember to dothis so I have started placing the due dates on the board as reminders to teh students and myself so I remember when to check them.

Hi Karen,
I agree! We need to hold our students accountable and check their work. No one likes to do anything and it not get acknowledged.

Following up on assignments helps the students understand that assignments are important for understanding course content and will be viewed by the instructor. I've had students complain that they put a lot of time and effort into an assignment that the instructor barely scanned. If the assignment is not viewed as important or beneficial, students will not stay motivated to fully engage in the course.

I found letting sttudents know on a weekly bases their grades is very helpful. Students are given grades immediately on assignments seem to have a better understading of the importance of submitting assignemnts on time.

Hi Jo,
Reprimand the student. It sounds like you have been more than fair. In the real world their tardiness on tasks will not be acceptable. They will lose their job.

I think that it is important to follow up on assignments and readings because it lets the instructor know who is actually taking time to do the assignments and who is not. Following up on the assignments also helps to evaluate whether or not they are retaining the information that is being taught. If a student is struggling in class and you know that they are not doing the reading or the assignments, then you will know what the problem is. Students need to know that you take your lecture and your assignments seriously. You are not giving assignments for the fun of it, you are giving them to enhance their knowledge.

Thank you

I printed your suggestions and want to incorporate them in my grading structure for several of my classes. Currently we have the final account for 50% of the students grade. I think this adds a lot of stress and does promote the possibility of cheating. I like having quizzes throughout. It not only keeps the students alert and engaged but gives me feedback as to how much of the material is being obsorbed. Thanks!

I am finding that some students will still not complete assignments even when I give them extra time. Not sure what else to do. All of the information provide here has been very helpful.

I think it's great that you offer options. I offer no make ups. While my classroom is designed for student success, I make my expectations clear that when they make a decision NOT to attend class they realize it will effect their grade. This is a good retention tool, as well as making the student realize that everyday is important and hopefully wil instill a good work ethic.
