The blame game
I find it benefitial to explain time management as a tool to put the focus of success on the student.
Hi John,
I agree! Micromanaging is way too time consuming! Employers are looking for employees who are mature, knowledgeable, dependable professionals who work well with little to know supervision.

Roger,
You are so right. Employers do not want people who need to be told to correct things several times. Most of middle management has been replaced and the managers who are left do not have time to micro manage.
Employers are looking for leaders. What are some of the signs of a leader? Well, they do not blame others - thay just find the problem and correct it. If someone needs to be terminated - it will be done in private.

Instilling an ownership mentality in students is very important. It goes back to, "even if you did not make the mess, you clean it up". In the field, this is vitally important. Employers will
look for someone who takes ownership of a situation and takes care of it without being told several times.
Hi Dale,
They probably will! Some people are just that way, they point the finger at everyone else, but themselves.
Patricia
Often I hear students blame past instructors when they are first in my course. It makes me wonder: Will they eventually blame me, too?
I agree and the employer would definitely want for an employee to take accountability and responsibilty for his/her actions.
Hi Maria,
I like for my students to speak up as well, but I always make decisions based on how an employer would look at things.
Patricia
Sometimes this habit of blaming others begins at a younger age and if allowed to continue, this student will not learn to focus on completing assignments in a timely manner and submitted when due. This cycle needs to be stopped so the student can feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work.It may take time to correct, but the instructor has a role to help the student in any way we can.
I agree. A student needs to understand that they are ultimately responsible to meet the deadlines both at school and on the job. I do think it is ok to give a reminder here and there, but they really need to learn to manage their time appropriately so they can meet their deadlines.
I also encourage my students to speak up if they think a deadline is unfair. I am more than willing to negotiate if the majority of the students agree.
