Students that challenge your grading.
What is the best way to handle a combative student who questions your grading rubric?
Another way to assure that there are less challenges is to have a well written grievance policy, whether or not you include graded assignments.
Hi Anna,
It does cause less problems when the instructor is very thorough in their explanation as to what needs to be done to complete the assignment. I am always leary about letting students grade each other's work. It is not the student's business to know of another student's grade, and also possibly special favors can be done when work is graded by students.

I find out that if the grading is explained in the very beginning of a class and if the academic freedom is explained as well and what it means when it comes to grading ( such as “overall impression”, or “use of a white space”, or “good proportion”), you leave less space for complain. Of course, every now and then you’ll have a student that will complain no matter how good of explanation you give him/her. They are just trying to bully their ways to better grade and if they are really persistent I give students to grade each other’s work clearly explaining the rules and where awarding/taking points should take place. I’m the last one that looks at work in question and gives/takes points. That way it seem more fare and leaves less space for future complains.
Hello,
I feel if you are consistent with your grading style and utilize the rubics to provide the grade, the student should have nothing to challenge you on.

Hi Darren,
Simply let them know professionally the grade will stand.
