This is important because it allows the instructor to redirect students who are off-track and/or ensure that students are mastering the concepts presented in the class.

Following up on assignments makes the students clearly understand I'm grading and making sure assignments are being completed and that I want them to know I take the time to grade and review all assignments.

Hi Laura,
Nicely responded to! Students deserve to receive follow up on their assignments.
Patricia

Hi Allen,
You are on point. I can not understand those instructors who do not follow up immediately with assignments. This really shows how much you care.
Patricia

Accountability helps everyone. By following up on assignments I show students that what has been assigned is important to their success and worth their time. In my own experience as an adult learner, I enjoyed receiving feedback from my instructors on the assignments they gave. I was motiviated to do my best when I saw my instructor taking the time to provide constructive feedback to me. I felt it was their way of showing they cared about me.

Hi Joannie,
They also need to know what should be worked on before being tested.
Patricia

By following up with assignments the instructor can identify the progress of the students,if anyone is falling behind, and if the lessons have been understood by the class. The instructor can then reinforce or clarify any information that may have been missed.

Hello Jimmy,
I have a simple policy for my instructors for following up on assignments. All assignments are to be graded and ready to return the next class period. Students want to see how they are doing.

Hi Rufus,

Assignments are either used to reinforce topics covered during class time or to prepare the student to participate in class activities or discussions. If the students perceive that the instructor does not feel the assignments important enough to take the time to follow up upon, then why should he/she expend the effort to do the assignment? In the courses I teach, the assignments normally are 50 to 65 percent of the final grade. Without completing the assignments, students can not pass my class. It is imperative that I follow up on each one. The most effective way I have found to accomplish this is that I give each student an update sheet every class. This sheet show how many point that have accrued toward final grade, what they score on each completed assignment, what assignments I have not received, and what assignments are still due and when the must be turned-in.

If we do not follow up on the assignments, we are setting the student up for failure. They may decide that the assignment is not that important and let other things come up rather than accomplishing the assignment.

Hi John,
The instructor should want to know if a student understands the concepts presented. If is fair for students to have immediate feedback.
Patricia

I agree. It is helpful and assists the students in knowing their strong as well as weak areas so improvements can be made before the end of the class.

In addition to showing the students you are serious, you also show youe commitment of staying abreast of their involvement and understanding of the material you present.

Hi Joannie,
It is only fair and professional to give immediate feedback to students with assignments. Students want to know how they are performing.
Patricia

Following up allows the student to know that you are paying attention and in tune to every aspect of the class.

Hi William,
Following up on assignments is very crucial. Students want to know how they've done on assignments. As educators, we should provide our students with immediate feedback. All assignments, if possible, should be graded by the next class meeting.
Patricia

It is very important to follow up on assignments. If you did not follow up the students would think the material nor the assignments are very important, and the instructor possibly doesn't care either. Follow up is crutial if you want to keep class control, and to keep the student interests. I've also found that if you taylor student assignments around the things they like they will do much better, if that is a possibility.

Hi Christina,
You're right! I've seen it, it is extremely hard for many students to get back on track. I typically give all students a midpoint grade or talk to them if necessary before midpoint.
Patricia

I have found that when a student starts out behind, he/she may lag to a point that they simply cannot catch up. For this reason I try to keep tabs on progress through contact with the students.
