Follow up sends the message that the assignment or reading given is relevant and important. It will also let the student know that they are going to be held accountable for putting in the effort necessary to be successful.

At the end of each week, students assignments are collected, usually during their test.If not completed then points are taken from their grade. Extra work may be done to improve their scores, if they have some work that was not completed.

You haev to set ground rules and have to be consistant or they will not take you serious

Hi Angelica,
You should want to know how your students are progressing.
Patricia

In my opinion it is important because it provides you feedback from the student. You want to know if the student is learning and understanding the material that is being taught.

I try to be very clear when assisgnmnts, either reading or actual work, are to be completed. I feel making this clear to students set the proper parameters for the course.

I have Lab groups in my course, at the beginning of every lab assignment I go over the task and the written portion of each lab. I give them plenty of time and tell them when there do. I then collect them and the next day, correct them and record there scores. I call each student up one at a time discuss there score, so they know were they stand in the course, they really seem to respond well to knowing were they stand in the course

Hi Danette,
You will quickly realize that if you follow up with reading, more students will actually READ because they know they are going to be held accountable.
Patricia

In all the years that I have been teaching, I have never thought to 'follow up' with reading. This is a good idea. I think I am going to implement it into my face-to-face class for discussion in the classroom.

Hi Tim,
You made some valid points! You should want to know if your students are grasping the material or not so that help can be provided, if there is a need.
Patricia

This is important for 3 main reasons:
1. To verify the students are following instructions.
2. This also allows the instructor to identify students who may be at risk of dropping or failing the course.
3. To insure they are receiving the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their chosen field (and quite often, in life).

Hi Alpha,
Great points made! Why should you give assignments if you are not going to follow up?
Patricia

You have to follow up with students assignment because some student will not turn them in. They also think we don't grade them.

In addition to letting students know that dealines are serious, following up enforces building on subject matter. Too many times students think that when a subject is finished, that will be the last time they need to deal with it or use the information learned. Following up shows the importance of the subject and usually integrating the follow up with the start of the next subject ties it together for them.

Hi Lori,
Most students really appreciate it whenver assignments are due on Monday. Most of our students work full-time jobs and having the weekend to get school work done really helps them.
Patricia

Hi Anna,

Yes, I believe it is important to let students know that you are serious about work required for their course. Students will certainly be more serious about completing assignments when they know that their instructor will follow-up with them on them! It will make them want to be prepared for the follow-up by completing the assignments.

Hi Instructor Scales,

It is important to follow up on assignments/readings because it lets students know that you are watching or tracking their work and not asleep at the wheel!

I follow up with all the assignments given. I also use the assignemtns for review in class, and have them all participate in giving the answers or their ideas.

I keep a space on the board during class time that shows what the assignments are for the week.

Assignments are due by the following Monday. This also allows them weekend time to get things done.

By being consistent it shows the student that you care and take their education seriously.

It works great for my students.

I have a individual meeting with each student midway thru the coarse to discuss their progress.

It's a matter of mutual respect. If I want students to respect my request that they hand in assignments on the due dates, then I must respect my students by returning graded assignments the next class day. If the student gets an A, I'll make a comment like, "Nice work!" If the student does poorly, I'll make a comment like, "See me." B and C students need to know how they can improve. I like to give comments on the assignments like, "Well researched, but watch your spelling!" or "You have the right idea, but please be more specific." I think being clear in advance on how assignments and tests are graded helps. And taking the time to write a comment on each paper saves a line at the end of the class period when everyone wants to know why they got the grade they got. Since my classes are on MW, I give assignments on Wed which are due Mon, then deduct 20% if it isn't turned in until Wed. And I don't take assignments after Wed, so we can focus on the current and upcoming work rather than overdue assignments. (Yes, this is clearly outlined in my syllabus and discussed 1st day of class.) -Jeanne
