I love the extra time that allows a follow up for edit.I will use this.
I assign case studies in my clinical. I usually give them back to the students within two days. Along with this I give them two more days to edit and fix related to the suggestions I have given. This way the students know you respect the time and effort they took to complete the project by getting imput promptly by the instructor.

They also let you know ,the number one question I recieve after an assignment is are we going to get the results back tomorrow?
Hi David,
Students need to know that we care about them and that we truly have their best interest at heart. Show students that we care by grading assignments within a timely manner.
Patricia
As said before this approach oto following up on assignments on a daily basis does work extremely well.

I also liked and believe in this approach. Thanks for the view point. It does show each student you are intersested as individuals.
I really like your approach to following up on assignments. I am a nursing clinical instructor and plan to use this approach when assigning case studies. I believe this approach shows you are interested in each student. By grading each piece of the assignment when they complete it also allows them to see their success and what they may need to work n.
Thank You for sharing!

Patricia,
It is most important when making sure the guidance was clear. If properly addressed, students should understand the desired learning outcome. It also prevents that potential disgruntled student and saves you time in the end.

Hi Gilbert,
You are on point! You should want to know how your students are grasping the material, and it is only fair to the student to let them know how they are progressing with various concepts.
Patricia
It shows that you are involved as an instructor in the students learning process. By offering feedback from the assignments students know that you care about their performance. This will encourage them to finish future assignments on time.
It will let the students know you are serious and that you hold yourself and the student to the same high standards.
Hi Jaclyn,
We as educators should want to know if our students are grasping the various concepts. Why wouldn't an instructor grade homework? Students should have an incentive for doing homework.
Patricia
I feel the most important reason to follow up with student assignments is to ensure the students are prepared. If they do not think that you are serious about checking their homework then they will no tcomplete it. Then the next day when you are reviewing the material they are lost which sometime can result in a disruption of the class because they become unruly to cover up the fact that they did not complete the work. It may also lead to a student putting up a barrier and becoming defensive and quiet and learning wil not occur in that case either.
Biggest one to me would be to see if the students has done the assignment, but more importantly to see if the students understands the material assigned.
If the instructor doesn't follow up and take them seriously then why should they? I have had students that tell me I am the only instructor they've had that actually reads and grades their homework. One student told me that he wrote something that didn't pertain to the homework just to see if the instructor was reading it and they got credit for it. Perhaps that's just laziness on the instructor's part. It certainly doesn't benefit the student.
Hi Leon,
Great response! May I add, it is simply the right and professioal thing to do.
Patricia
The follow up is important for the students to know that you didn't just waste their time. Working adults, and parents who don't get paid to do all the work at home (and all that entails) do not need to waste the precious comodity we all have so little of. Assignments should always be pertinent to the subject matter in some way. Following up, even by verbally relating it to a real world experience can have a positive impact on the students and their 'buy in' factor. Short pop quizzes can sometimes be another means of following up. Grading those little quizzes can save you some time too...it will show you and the students who actually did the assignments and readings. Another way to follow up is to have a group discussion regarding the assignment or reading just completed. Make that a small group discussion, each group being given a sub-topic or section from the reading to present to the rest of the class after a prep time...gives the students a chance to be heard and to feel like they are actively participating in their own learning.
Follow-up creates a sense of academic discipline in the classroom and provides a framework for evaluation. But most importantly these follow ups provide a sense of involvement with the student and class and is simply good teaching.
Hi Peggy,
Student should always feel that every assignment is important. Instructors are to ensure this importance by grading or at the least reviewing assignments. If the assignments are not reviewed by the instructor, the students have no motivation to do the assignments.
Patricia
Following up on assignments is important so the students understand that it will affect the overall grade if they are not turned in. This is not busy work, it helps to reinforce what was covered in lecture.
