Hi Pietro,
Super! How do you follow up with homework assignments (written)?
Patricia
In my area of Culinary arts, our students are required to bring 3 completed plates of food to the instructor for evaluation. At this point feed back is given. One of the great things about this is help to keep a positive tone in the kitchen during class.
Hi Pietro,
It appears when students are getting immediate feedback from the instructor, it keeps excitement alive. I like the idea of 3 stars and one wish. How have you used this?
Patricia
I start with a classroom calender one day one and everytime I assign homework/report/extra work, I have one student update our calender and on the due date, I have a folder on my desk and at the start of class, they know to turn it, and its 10 points off everyday its late. The reason I stress on-time assignments - when you are working with patients, you don't have the option to run late or decide whenever you want to help them.
I agree, the students who have taken the time and completed their work, deserve it to be acknowledged. The students who are unprepared can also see their peers getting credit for comleted work assignments. Follow up is key to keeping students on task, and on point.
If I don't follow up with assignments it puts us behind in class projects. So I like to quiz them at the beginning of class over there assignment.
Some students will test your boundries. It is important that when you say something is due you follow up.
I agree with your comments. I place grades on all student assignments to further enhance their learning experiences. Otherwise, students find the assignment irrevelant without obtaining a grade.

There would be a number of students who would simply ignore the assignment. They equate necessity with being graded. The believe that if they are not getting graded it is not worth their time.
When teaching if I do not follow up in a timely manner the class starts to become kind of gloomy. As an instructor, I am required to have grades posted within 48 hours. For a week and a half my computer died. My students we starting to become very restless, because usually with in 24 hours their grades are posted. When the do not see their accomplishments they start to become discouraged.
In my class I also give instant feedback on the daily assignments. One thing that I learned from a friend of mine who is a career teacher (he went to school to teach, I started in vocational). He told me to give them 3 stars and one wish. Meaning, give the students 3 compliments in the verbal critique and one wish, something they can do to improve.
Great to give students job related reasons and the consequences of completeing assignments.
I agree to the comparison of completing homework to on work duties. Usually students who are lazy with class assignments are also inconsistent and lazy at work. By training them now to complete their assignments we are preparing them for the real workforce later.

Hi Donna,
Nicely stated! Students need to be held accountable, else...
Patricia
It is important to follow up with the homework assignments because students should not be permitted to avoid not doing them. We would be setting someone up to fail if we let this go. Completing homework is like completing your duties on the job and if you do not do your job there will be consequences such as termination.
Therefore, as instructors we must follow up and make sure assignments are bein done.
this also helps both instructor and student to daily stay on point.
I agree with your comments. By reading the assignments you gain knowledge as to which students understand what they read, and which students are merely copying from the assigned text.

I think it is imperative for students to see that you hold yourself to the same standards to which you hold them. By actually reading and responding not only do the students get necessary information corrected. Additionally you get a chance to see who understands a concept versus a student who copies or parrots what was read.
So they can actually learn new material.
If you don't follow up with an assignment the student feels like they are not getting anything out if. (regardless if it's just standard reading assignments) If you don't discuss or respond to work that they've done I think most students feel like it was a waste of their time. As an instructor it's important to remember that students are coming to school and going to class for structure and if it is not provided they feel that they could learn more on their own.
Hi David,
Graded assignments should be given back the next grading period. It is only fair to the student to provide immediate feedback so that they know how they are progressing.
