tardy
If a student is tardy without a reasonable excuse should you let them make up the work they missed?
I allow my student to make up missed work for a tardy unless I notice a pattern of tardiness. Nobody is perfect and we are all late once in a while.
If a student is tardy in my program he or she loses 10 points off of his ethics grade. In our grading system, 10% of the students overall grade is work ethics. That means show up on time with your tools and books with your uniform on. If they are absent they lose 25 points for the day. If they show up without any of those three they get sent home to get them. We try to break any of the students bad habits before they graduate. Some students don't like but the contractors that hire our students sure do.
We also have a seperate classification of tests and quizes. If the student is absent then they can make it up for 3/4 the credit. If they are late to class we allow them to do the test/quiz for 100% of the grade, but they sacrafice the time.
I agree with others that have stated that school is intended to teach real life work situations and tardiness should not be tolerated. I tell my students that it is one of the easiest ways to red flag a worker who is not pulling their weight. This can affect their appraisals for wages and their prospects for promotion.
Hi LATONYA,
I concur! At my institution we have adopted the same policy, and it works beautifully.

No we have a strict classroom policy that if the quiz or exam is done, and they are tardy, they get to have whatever time is left to complete the quiz or exam, if all of the students have already completed the quiz or exam, then they get a zero. It has been a great tool in classroom managment, it is important that they are in class everyday on time, just as it would be expected of them in the workplace.
You have to make sure that if you make a exception for a situation that you stick to it and not make exceptions constantly in your class room
I know with how our program is set if a student misses a quiz they can make it up at the next class meet up only. If it's a test it can not be made up if they miss it. So we have a classification separating testes and quiz's.
Integrity and consistency can only validate the mission of the school and program. Tardy rules given clearly and often outline the expectations. Tardy is tardy. Less time for the exam is the outcome. Everyone has until the end of class to complete the exam. Once an exception is made, subjectivity is introduced and instructor/and or program integrity is jeopardized.
Hi Kimberly,
It is nice when rules are in place because it is so much easier to maintain structure.

Tardiness is complicated. Most of my students are pretty good about being on time, and those that aren't usually get taken aside an spoken to. The real issue for me is either Senior-itis or students who just don't care. With these two things, the point of no return has been passed and as a result its hard to expect any profound changes. Some seniors will snap out of it given a good talk, but others are just spent and you have to lower the expectation of what they will do in class. As far as actual management of time in class when they are late, past a certain time I make the student take the exam after class so that it doesn't detract from everyone else's time. I feel like less time to take an exam is unfair because penalizing a student in a manner that could hurt the integrity of their education is not a good way to enforce our rules.
I agree. I give a set amout of time at the start of the quiz, and if they show up 15min late then they only have what time is left to take the quiz or test. If they miss it completely then they have to make it up on there own time with a grade reduction.
If a student is tardy and the class is taking a quiz, I will allow them to take the quiz. I do however tell them that they only have a limited time to take it. If they are absent...a test can be made up the following day after the last class. Id if the student is absent for a quiz, the handbook states that the student will receive a zero for that score. This school rule makes it easy to deal with some students who decide to not come to school. The only time I allow a student to make up a quiz is if they approach me prior to the quiz and inform me of a legitimate reason then I schedule a time to take that quiz with that student.
