One way to reduce cheating is to give two different versions of the same test. I also make sure my students are spaced out so it is harder for eyes to wander.

I make sure from the first day that students know the policy about cheating and I am always visible and moving during exams. Our policy is not quite zero tolerance, but is near that. The first incidence is a 0 for the test/assignment, the second incidence (even in another class) is failure of that class, and the third is removal from the program - almost a three strikes policy.

Hi Kathy,
There is a rule in my class that students are not allowed to use their calculator on their cell phone during class time.

Hi Unique,
I like the idea about seating. Instructors can even assign seats during each test date.

Hi Debbie,
I really like the idea of using an all essay test when possible. Essay tests are extremely hard to cheat on.

the students cheat mostly on objective type-mCQ and matching questions. by varying the qustions in their postions in diferent papers,we have 3-4 sets of paper. the students sitting close each other will be given different sets of question paper.thier papers will have the MCQ in different order.this will prevent cheating.
maintain appropiate distance between students.
cheating will cause them points on professional conduct which will be graded in thier class activity/participation and effect their grades

One way I use is to reduce as many distractions as possible. Everything a student has with them at that time is in their bags or away from their desk/table. I also give each student a different version of the same test. Have True/False, multiple choice, short answers and essay forms. This can greatly reduce cheating. Each student gets the same test but formated differently.

I think some ways to help reduce cheating is to move the seats around during test time. Have the instructor change seats throughout the testing period and or sit in the back until the students have completed the test.

I do as many others have mentioned: different versions of tests, chairs separating students, and no use of cell phones or electronic devises during the test.
I also make sure to have plenty of extra calculators for students to use. This keeps students from needing to use the calculator on their cell phone during the test.

Hi Karianne,
When students know that they are being watched, they are more unlikely to cheat.

I walk around the room while students are testing to prevent wandering eyes.

Ask all students to place their cell phone in a box in the front of the room before a quiz or exam helps. All books off their work space and then continually be scanning the room with my eyes while walking around. I never grade papers or do anything else while the students are testing. This reduces the amount of cheating but I'm sure they still find a way.

Hi Toni,
All are great ways to minimize cheating. I definitely do not allow any type of electronic devices on the desk. Cell phones can be our enemies during test time.

Hi Harry,
Another great tactic to help reduce cheating. I encourage students to not allow others to cheat from them. I let my students know if they willingly let someone cheat from them, they are just as guilty.

Don't hide the fact you're monitoring the student. I always have an obvious presence on exam days and I never try to hide or conceal the fact that I'm walking around observing everything. There's no point, in my opinion, in trying to conceal yourself while monitoring an exam. Take away the tempation!!

I try to appeal to those who would let cheaters copy their work. I give them strategy to deflect the request from the cheater.

Sometimes I will just simply stand in the back of the room. Students will not know if I am watching them and they will not take the chance.

Also watch the ipods. You may think they are listening to music, but in fact it may be their notes.

Be aware of your students when giving tests by watching them closely.
