I find switching the test from multiple choice to fill in the blank unnounced would help, because when the students know there will be a test and they automaticaly assume It's multiple choice they could very well have in mind to cheat, but when you switch the test it minimizes the chance of cheating.
review test with class few days proir to giving.do not leave clas unattended while test is being given.give pop quiz proir to test day.let students form a study group to help study for test
Tonight in class I gave a quiz. I used some of the tips I learned in this forum to minimize cheating. I had a gut feeling a few of my students were having wondering eyes, but had no proof. Tonight I had them all switch to different seats than they usually sit in, so they were away from who they were used to sitting next to. I also had them sit one seat apart from eachother. You should have seen the looks I got from one of the two I suspected of cheating! After class, one of the other students approached me and thanked me for doing that. She had noticed the attempts at cheating previously and was glad I had done something about it. So thank you!

I make up different versions of test which I hope reduces the chances of cheating. I also allow the students to select their individual project which allows for individual work.
I observe students. If I think a student may be cheating I will politely ask that student to take another seat.
I have the students undergo a ritual in which they must stand up, shake hands with 3 other students and wish them well on the test, then they must sit in a seat different from where they started - this helps to shuffle the students and keeps them from sitting next to the person they were apt to cheat from - or the person who might have cheated off of them.
Prior to exams all text books bags purses to front of the room. Items can not be retrieved until after everyone completes the exam.
Hi Alyson,
An instructor should never sit during test time. Students need to know that you are in motion and mobile.

I observe the students. do not take this time to catch up on other work or prepare for lectures. Several versions of the test works well too and separatig students or spreading them out is helpful.
You can separate the students. Removing the opportunity to cheat may be helpful. If there isn't enough room within the class it is more difficult.
Walk around the class during the test. also give diferent versions of the same test
Hand out two forms of the test
Hi Katrena,
Students need to know that they are being watched. I like the idea of being mobile during test time.
Patricia
Hi Lisa,
I also make the students clear their desk of EVERYTHING.

To be quite honest this could take to much time.
We live in the technology age. So why not utilize it? By using software such as activity monitor, you can actually monitor your students on your computer screen while they are taking their tests. Let them know this if you want. Or if you want to test the honor system, just go with the flow. I beleive we should stop wasting so much paper and start taking advatage of our network. Save the trees lol
I hand out different versions of the same test. That way I keep the assessment uniform and accurate as possible.
I stand in the back of the classroom and walk around as the tests are being taken. This seems to eliminate the problem.
Make up multiple test and leave an empty chair between students if possible.
Moving desk further apart and moving around classroom during testing
The method that I use to reduce student's cheating is create 1 test and sort it 3 different orders. I pass them out so that the student sitting next to another do not receive the same test. As I am administering the test, I am constantly walking and monitoring the class until the time is up for the test. Also, I never allow students to have their graded test copies back until after I've tested all of my classes. This works wonders!!!
