i use differnet forms of test and i always walk around the room in different direstions during test time and they never know where i might stop and look or who i might apporach at any time during the test. i try to wear shoes that have silent soles on them.

During the test, position yourself in the back of the class. When you position yourself in the back of the class, the students know that you can see what they are doing and they can’t see what you are doing. cheating become more risky for the students.

Explaining to them that the cheater is the loser, because he or she has not learned the information taught and this information could be very inportant to their success in the future.

Making sure students know they are being watched is very effective. I also like to move students before an exam. Everyone has their preferred seating arrangement and if I interfere with that arrangement, it breaks up cheating patterns or partners.

Yes... Elizabeth I change my quizzes and exams frequently. From the answers I sometimes get, I know students have the answers from previous exams.

I sometimes change the order of the questions and or the order of the answers if it's multiple choice. I like to give different versions of an exam to random students and if I suspect cheating, I try to make sure students sitting near the cheater have different test versions.

Giovanni, oh! I wish I had that software. I have to walk the classroom in order to keep the students focused. While I'm writing on the board or explaining something on the overhead, I can see some students are more attentive to their monitors. I suppose Facebook friends are of more immediate interest.

Having a software program on all pc's that allows you to view all students screens from your desktop(I teach application courses, and all exams are applied exams on the PC).

Monitoring student during testing is essential. Moving around the classroom, asking if there are any questions, making sure students know that they are being monitored.

I have also experienced that same example and the student was forthright in letting me know that the answers were attached.

I observe the students . I separate the tables if the classes are large. I also tell students that both the cheaters and the person whom they are cheating from(because they generally know) will both get zeros.( A little harsh but it works- as I have never had a problem to date.)

David walking around the class is a good way to lessen the chances of cheating. I sit in the back of the classroom occasionally and this seems to alert students. A cheating student may hesitate if he can not see the instructor.

In the beginning of the class I tell the students I give multiple versions of the exam and they don't know which they or their neighbor has.

These test versions vary by questions and by answers. In other words 2 tests may have the same questions but different answers (multiple choice answers) or the same questions but in a different order.

I like to move students around for an exam. This creates space between them and I attempt to seat a weak student next to another weak student. Students know who the strong and weak students are and those who may cheat usually will not copy from a weaker student.

Hi William,
Expulsion is a sure way to get the students to think twice about cheating. Expulsion is extremely harsh.

Hi Annette,
I have experienced the same thing in medical transcription as well as other computer classes. I let students know up front the different scenarios that are considered cheating, and if they are caught what the repercussions are. I like to whenever I can give my students different cases to transcribe so that cheating is minimized, and they cannot print someone else's work because each student is transcribing different cases(s).

Hi Mark,
That's right. If I see it, I will definitely deal with it swiftly and quickly.

I feel cheating is reduced by emphasizing that
the student will learn more, and develop better
workplace skills if "they do their own work."
I don't "look for cheating," but students know
I am aware, and will take counter measures if
I see it.

I mostly teach information technology course that require the students to hand in things created using word or excel. Students are more likely to cheat with these things becasue they can just copy and paste very easily. At my school we use a program that will let me watch the students screens. I let the students know that I am watching them by using the same program to send a short message such as, Mr. D says hello. When the students know I have the ability to do this they are less likely to cheat in class. I also then show them a screen shot of a previous student that I caught cheating. Of course I white out the name. They respond very well to this.

I make three different copies of the same test and i make eye contact with the students at all times.

Hi Marlene,
It is important to make sure that the desk is clear of all items except the test and something to write with. I even make my students put cell phones away.
Patricia

excellent idea. This makes sense. I like to have the students leave their personal belongings in the back or front row of the class and sit everyother seat.
