Student Involvement - Language Issues

What can an instructor do to involve students for whom English is a second language?

When I lecture tend to give many examples that may relate to that students particular culture that really gets their attention and gives them a better understanding.

Hi Sharon,
These type of students that have English as a second language simply needs more time. Spending time one-on-one with them makes a big difference.

I tutored 3 students when they first started. They all spoke a common native tongue and each understood English at different levels. The extra time spent with them really paid off in their grades and enthusiasm for the course.

Hi John,
I try to spend more one-on-one/extra time with students who have English as their second language. I have noticed they can get it, but it just takes longer.
