Thomas,
You are right about students needing to feel they are part of the class. Students who are not assigned to a group to participate will often fall away and not continue on in their students. They are the students who we often see disappear.
Face-to-face interaction is vital in illustrating to the student the relevance and value of the course objectives for them. Additionally, it allows the facilitator the ability to engage the adult student’s desire to be involved in the planning and evaluation of their instruction.
Clear communication between teacher and student is important to the teaching/learning process. But, clear communication is not automatic everytime that people interact. Many think that poor communication often results when people have different perspectives of the same events, Not so much, Instead..I believe that this can be a good thing, engaging your students and validating their perspectives shows respect.
To make them feel equally valuable. Every student is an individual and they all have differences. As the instructor, we need to be aware of those differences, so we can attend to their various learning styles and aid them in their educational success.
Hi Patricia,
It is very important to have intercations with each indivisual student. This type of interaction reassures the students that they are not just another number or last name. It also gives the students a sense of confidence.
It is important to have interaction with every student so that I am able to better aknowledge them as an important part of the team that is the classroom. I believe that there are times when a student can help to explain different topics in a way that the other students can understand or grasp a concept. An example of this is a calculation for drug doses. Often I have a student who may normally stay quiet thrive on coming up to the board and showing his math knowledge.
Hi Rebecca,
There are not any specific rules I follow. I am a well respected instructor, and I carry myself professionally at all times. I have an open door policy, and I am very approachable. I am also very easy to talk to. These charateristics will definitely help build rapport.
Patrici
As a new insructor I am still shakey on the difference between rapport building and beign overly friendly. I suppose this will come with time. Are there specific "rules" you follow?

Hi Dana,
Online classese are good for the introvert student. They would rather take online classes. They tend to really become involved.
Patricia
Hello James,
May I add, you can always teach above students level because you know a lot more about the subject matter than they do, but as you mentioned instructors need to teach on the students level. I teach my courses as if students do not know anything about them so that I can reach all students.
Patricia
Hi William,
Students greatly appreciate knowing that the instructor cares. I can tell you care a great deal about each of your students.
Patricia
By interacting with each student it shows them you care about them, and helps build trust between both the student and the instructor. Make sure you interact with each student each day, and not just about the class material, but about their lives, health, and family. Don't become their friend, but rather their mentor. Show you care about them.
I think that is as important that every student is relaxed as he can be in class, that means that I must be able to teach at that same level so they are able to understand the technical information that I am relaying to them.
I teach three levels of electronics, in the begining it is the hardest of the classes you must make them fell relaxed and comfortable as possiable, keep their attension through a six hour lecture and still have fun in class, you have to interact with them on a personal basis not put yourself above them, but on the same level.
Hello Everyone,
Interaction within an online setting is a crucial aspect in continuing the lines of communication with students and the teacher. Engaging students through higher order questions and allowing for the sharing of personal experiences is a great way to further engage students within the discussion board. Students seem to become comfortable with this format and this also supports the silent students. The online setting seems to reduce anxieties and allows students to express themselves in a positive manner.
Interacting with the students develops a rapport with them and makes them feel that you are concerned with their learning. The rapport develops a relationship that may keep them from cheating. It also lets them know that you are aware of what is going on in the classroom, which keeps them on task.
Also, the students that may not speak out or ask for help will be getting the same attention as those with less inhibitions. It gives fair time to everyone.
Interacting with students does a variety of things. First, it allows the student to become aware of the instructor as an individual, and the instructor gains the same knowledge of the student. This reduces complaints and helps to manage the classroom effectively. Second, it creates an environment in which the student feels able to ask questions and seek help if it is needed. That ultimately will fuel the students education. Finally, it creates a two way system of communication and that is something to be prized.
Hi Mark,
It is important to treat all students the same.
