Why is it important to establish classroom management?
Classroom management has to be established day 1 of class. Once the students understand the importance of the course and structure of the classroom they will be apt to learn.
Hi Novella,
Absolutely! Enforce the rules to ALL.
Patricia
At the beginning of each term a day is set aside to orientate student to not only the topics to be covered but my expectations and rules.
I try to consistently abide by my own rules, because inevitably someone will want to be an exception to the rule.
I have found that if you start making exceptions for one student you have to do it for them all and this will ruin the management structure and make them think that my rules can easily be broken.
Hello Christine,
Standards and expectations given up front leave more room for a stress free teaching environment.
Patricia
This is so true. If your standards and expectations are clearly laid out up front, time does not need to be wasted an a regular basis, allowing for a more focused classroom dynamic.
Hi Laura,
What a great system to use to hold your students accountable.
Patricia
Yes, I have. I simply state to the student that it is mentioned in the class syllabus which was covered the first day of class. I also have all the students sign stating that they have read over the syllabus and understand all the class policies. When a student still argues with me about a policy, I also bring this up asking the student why he/she signed if he/she did not completely understand all of the policies. This way, the student cannot say that he/she was unaware.
Hi Laura,
Have you ever had a student to argue about a policy knowing the policy before hand?
Patricia
I agree. Having students know what is to be expected from them and from the instructor helps the flow of the class. This way there is no room for arguments in regards to a policy in the future.
I agree Katrina. This will assist students in knowing what they should expect. This also sets the standard for them moving forward with the class.
