respect
WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF BEING A INSTRUCTOR I HAD AN ISSUE WITH SOME STUDENTS. WHAT A TEST! I FELT BY TAKING THEM ASIDE AND EXPLANING THE ISSUE I GAINED ALOT OF RESPECT FROM THEM. THUS KEEPING THE ISSUE BETWEEN US.
Hi Leigh,
No one likes dealing with confrontation, but it is inevitable in education. We have to sometimes deal with students for various situations one-on-one.
Patricia
I have always been one to avoid confrontation, but I am finding that speaking one on one does develop more respect and understanding on both the student side and my side of the situation.
I have a conversation with my students on the first day of class. I discuss my expectations of them in the classroom. I also let them know we may not all like each other, but we WILL respect each other. I stress that point, I want them to respect each other, not just me.
I like that as well. I will use that philosophy for things outside of work! My kids will appreciate!
Hello Michael,
Respect is a two-way affair. Simple, you respect me, and I'll respect you.
Patricia
I agree completely, You should treat them with the respect that you would want to be treated with. You will be surprised a what you get back in return. Just put yourself in their place, and think how you would want to be treated. If I was approached in a confrontational manner, I would not like it.
Hi Joyce,
A calm demeanor carries a lot of weight. Calmness will allow students to open up to you.
Patricia
Hello Joseph,
Absolutely! You can be firm, but at the same time be fair. Most students appreciate this type of treatment.
Patricia
Sure, calmly addressing the issue shows students you're serious, but also that you're available for dialogue.
Patricia, I also agree, putting a student on blast is wrong. treat the student the we expect to be treated, even being firm but fair goes a long way in the classroom.
Hi Marla,
Nicely said. It sounds like you definitely know how to respect your students so that they respect you.
Patricia
I agree. You should never approach a student in a confrontational manner, nor in front of the entire class. Students will be more apt to respect you if you treat them with the same respect they would want to be treated with. Pulling the students aside will display that you care enough to let them know in private, not in front of the entire class, and establish that you expect to be respected at all times.
Hi Donald,
Make up your mind to have a zero tolerance level for disrespectful students. Do not allow a student to disresepct you. Put an end to it immediately.
Patricia
As professional instructors it is very difficult to deal with disrespectful students. Remaining calm and speaking to the student is the only way to resolve the conflick.
Hi Dianne,
I like that saying. It strongly agree with it!
Patricia
I often say praise in public criticize in private
Patricia,
I definitely will I appreciate your encouragement!!
Yes, I have fortunately I was able to use reasonable calmness to quell the matter. I appreciate your feedback on this area Patricia...Thanks again!
Hello Daronell,
Sometimes it is important for the student to hear from the instructor that it is not the end of the world. Keep trying!
