Showing respect to students as a professional should in most cases gains you there respect.

Hi Peter,
You are on point! Students need mentors, role models, leaders, etc. Students do not need us as a friend.

Hi William,
I concur! The instructor sets the tone and should always lead by example.

Students think they want a friend when they really need a knowledgeable professional who will guide their development. Because students develop a certain affection for personable teachers, they naturally want to extend their relationship into the area of friendship.

A good teacher will never let this happen. There is a superior/subordinate relationship in any educational environment that must be sustained. If a teacher becomes a student's friend, the teacher will undermine the basis of the teacher's authority.

I could not agree more. The students are going to follow the instructors lead. If the instructor is setting a bad example and is not professional at all time the students wont be as well.

Hi Jacci,
You have it! I can tell you are a true professional, and you lead by example.

There is an old saying I used to teach my middle school students: "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." Professional dress helps instructors establish a tone for their classroom from the very first moment students meet them. Professional image has, of course, other facets as well, such as the language one uses, the subjects one discusses, and even such areas as how one is presented on social media pages. Even one's email address needs to be evaluated for its impact on an educator's professional image. Everything one does, says, and demonstrates needs to project an image of professionalism and competence.

By not maintaining a professional distance students will lack experience in knowing what is or isn't appropriate. We have to prepare students for what they are going to face when they start they're career.

you have to dress the part to be respected

An instructor should not allow a buddy-buddy relationship in order to maintain respect from the student

Because Im their teacher and they need to see me as their teacher. This is very important for class management, respect, and success. (It's kind of like being a parent and not a child's friend, they need a parent).

professional dress, professional conduct are some of the main things that help to gain students respect.

I agree, lead by example. Gives the students a role model in which to follow.

Maintaining a professional distance needs to be kept all times. Avoid becoming buddies with students and creating favorites. By doing so, you can better evaluate all your students.

The main reason in keeping that line clearly drawn in the sand is to not step over it. By becoming a buddy with your student it is creating a disadvantage to that student. He/She may think because you are friends they will get out of an assignment, get a higher grade, or get a less harsh review of a paper. It creates animosity among the other students as well. In addition it will make you look unprofessional and at some point will add to the class disruptions and problems.

TO show student you want to be respected as a professional

We want to keep it professional

Hi Jennifer,
The instructor/student relationship should be strictly professional. You do not need to have a personal relationship with your students.

Patricia Scales

Maintaining a professional distance is essential to obtaining students' respect and effectively managing a classroom. Additionally, some career colleges have strict policies regarding fraternizing with students. Maintaining a professional distance makes it easier to avoid inappropriate relationships or awkward situations with students.

Hi Tina,
Yes. Our students do not need another friend. Our students are in need of role models.
