Professional Image

I always tell my students on the first day of class my academic credentials and my experiences. I feel that students should know their Instructors experience in their fields of expertise.

Hi Connie,
Credentials are important, but why throw them around when you are unprepared. Some people simply talk a good game, but have no action to back it up.
Patricia

Hi Kent,
Students must understand that there is a certain line that is not to be crossed.
Patricia

Yes, I agree that some background on experience and education is crucial. One thing I saw as very important was drawing the line between friendship and being a professional. I agree with this completely.
Kent

I agree that sometimes an instructor thinks it is all about a degree. (the rumpled professor that always looks slovenly and not prepared) but is quick to expound on his credentials. Out side appearance is important as well as a concern for others. We should be positive in our approach, humble in our manner and willing to tell our expertise as well as show it. It all is a package of professionalsim that we all should adhere to at all times.

Hi Jennifer,
I concur as well. Students really do seem to perk up once they know that you are fully qualified. We all want to learn from a valuable resource.
Patricia

I agree. When my students find out how much experience, training and education I have, I can see them visibly relax. Every students wants to feel like they are getting the best education possible and the best value for their money. Knowing they are being taught by someone with proper credentials reduces their anxiety.

Hi Jo,
You are on target. Presentation is everything. Students want you to be able to teach effectively so that they can understand the course material. Your reputation as an educator spreads quickly at an educational institution. You hardly ever hear a student mention of an educator's credential, but you hear all the time, she is a good teacher or otherwise.
Patricia

I think it is important to share your credentials, I have seen instructors rely on this too much. All the credentials in the world are not going to make you a good teacher. It is what you do in the classroom everyday that will build your credibility with your students.

Hi Nancy,
Simply put, lead by example. We should never expect anything of our students that we ourselves are unwilling to do.
Patricia

Yet, isn't Profession Image more than just your credentials?? I've seen people looking unwashed and unkempt trying to tell students in career college area to be more professional? How can we say we have done it and lived it if we aren't presenting it??? Being on time, prepared for class, excited and involved are all a part of PI!!

Too often we get complacent with the materials and that leads to apathy with the students. Being professional doesn't mean being distant. I like the fine line between too personal and too aloof. I think this depends on the college and the guidelines from the department chairs and DOE's.

Hi Dawn,
I like the idea of only sharing applicable information during this time, yet you are personable enough to share other information when asked.
Patricia

I too always make sure day 1 to share about my professional background. Some of my educational background does not apply to the field I teach in, so I leave that out, but will share when asked. Also with my day 1 introductions I share quickly the basics about me, married, kids... as I have my students share that about themselves. A great way to create rapport and keep it professional.

I feel the sharing of you background and education and or experience is a very valuable tool on that first day or a new class

Hi Ronald,
It really does add credibility to an instuctor to share their educational background with the class. As instructors, we share our educational background at orientation, but it is important to share it in class with your students as well.
