Why is your personal attire and image important as an instructor
First impressions, similar to attending an interview.
Dressing professionally shows the students that you respect them, and that you respect yourself.
Very profound statement! I like it! When an instructor takes care with his/her appearance, it also shows a respect for the instructor's students. They know that if the instructor cares enough to look and act in a professional manner, they are also most likely to be the type who deals with students in that same professional manner.
It makes the student concentrate on the content of the material and have more respect for the person delivering the material.
Hi Jessica,
As an instructor you do tend to dress according to your area. I am a business instructor, and I am very conservative and professional with my attire. My students tell me all the time that my dress is very professional and conservative in nature, and I really do look the part.
Patricia
I agree with this statement. I am a writing instructor and many of the instructors in our department are very creative people, this is expressed in our clothing (we're an off beat bunch).
However, color and funky patterns don't take away from the fact that we dress neatly and present ourselves well.
I think its all about knowing your field and making sure to not cross too many lines.
Looking sharp sends a message to the students.
Looking disordered sends a message to the students too, but the wrong message.
Students will draw conclusions about you based on how you look. That may generate attitude that will make them difficult to deal with.
Better to start off with a best case scenario and let them draw conclusions from the impression you make on them.

Students look to you as an example. you should always strive to be a good one. In other words, FIT THE PART!
Hi Bill,
I like it! I especially like it how you still look professional even when you want to act casual with a sport coat. I can tell you look the part.
Patricia
Mt attire is the same as if I am in my professioanl working setting. It consistnely inkvovles a chirt, tie, jacket - typically a suit, and when I want to act casual - a sport coat. That is the way we dress in my profesison, and hthere is no casual Thursday, Friday or whatever.
Hi Albert,
Absolutely, lead by example and practice what you preach.
Patricia
I couldnt agree with you more. A Surgical Technology student must learn early on that clean, neat, professional attire is a must. The students are fortunate to have an instructor that, not only expects that from them, but also demonstrates it.
Who we are speaks so loudly that students cannot hear what we say! If you come dressed professional and groomed, students think of you that way and listen.
Hi Michael,
Simple, we should lead by example, and practice what we preach.
Patricia
You should dress according to the field.
Hi Alicia,
We are to show the example that students are expected to be in the workplace.
Patricia
I strongly agree with that. I'm a massage therapy instructor, and no matter whether it is a lab class or mainly lecture I always wear scrubs and ask my students to do the same. I believe it sets a good example for the students and helps remind this is a professional setting and to view as if it is a job.
Hi Tarsha,
I live by this moto, "Strictly Business". I look and act the part.
Patricia
Hi Sandie,
You are my kind of instructor! You certainly practice what you preach. It amazes me whenever instructors expect their students to do something and they do just the opposite...I don't get it! At my institution, I hold my instructors to standards that are higher than that of students.
