Keeeping the classroom up beat and Positive

I feel it comes from your attitude when you walk into a class. If you are having a bad day leave it at the door.

Hi Jerry,
That's right, in the classroom everything should be kept strictly professional/business.
Patricia

I agree that my personal problems/issues have no place in the classroom; that is not the focus of the class. When I start my lectures, I try to demonstrate the passion and energy I have for the topic to my students to motivate them.

I remain positive so my students have an enjoyable learning experience and I want them excited about their new career! They could have chosen another school or program. For a lot of my students, they need support and a positve influence to keep them going and complete the program.

I could not agree more. While instructors are human, the adult students come to learn not to have their time wasted.

I left the healthcare field after 36 years and am now sharing my experience and knowledge with HIT students. I love teaching as much as I love my profession. During my tenure as a department head, I found that my attitude always set the "stage" for my staff. Therefore, it was always upbeat, even if it was difficult. I would tell my managers/supervisors that they should take on the role of "cheerleaders" sort of speaking. Jimmy Buffet says it well- your attitude is your altitude...he is so right. Therefore, I practice the same in my classroom. I am glad to see that others share my view.

Thank you Patricia! I appreciate the encouragement. It is my prayer that I can make a positive difference in someone's life on a daily basis, for in blessing someone else, I too am blessed by their appreciation!! :)

Hi Cindy,
I absolutely love your attitude and outlook on the teaching profession. I can tell you are enthusiastic about teaching. You warmed my heart with this response. It is obvious that you make a substantial difference in your students lives. Stay positive and encouraging!

I try to maintain a spirit of joy and excitement about being their instructor. I tell my students that it is a privilege to be their instructor and that I am there to serve them. On the first day of class I disperse a handout that explains what a “Buddy System” is (Sailors are shipmates, firemen have the “2 in and 2 out” system, etc.). I inform them that it is my goal for the class to become an “Educational Buddy System” in which we are to be supportive and encouragers of one another. We are to help each other be successful in our goals whenever possible. I also hand out a list of encouraging quotes for the students to refer to whenever they need to be inspired. This has eased the students’ anxieties and seems to create fellowship among the class from the start. It is very important to come to class refreshed and enthusiastic in order to conquer any negativity the students may bring with them. “A smile happens in a flash, but its memory can last a lifetime.” :)(Author Unknown)

Hi Mary,
An instructor should certainly lead by example, the positive/good attitude starts with the instructor.

Hi Benita,
Great response! The minute you walk into the building the happy face goes on, and you give your students your very best daily.

Regardless of the bad day we are having, we can not allow that to hinder us as instructors. If we walk into the classroom with an attitude the students are almost always going to feel that it is something they are doing or have done. And when that happens the students lose, the instuctors lose, and the school loses.Keeping the classroon upbeat and positive is very important to the learning experience. It not only enhances the students ability to learn, it also enhances the instructors ability to teach.

A postive attitude enhances the student's prospective of you the instructor

Hi Jennifer,
That's right! Students really do not need to know when you are having a bad day. Put your happy face on and give your students your very best, regardless.
