Respect or Liked
Respect is something that is earned, in order to get it one must give it. While that might not always be the case, as an instructor one has to keep that in mind at all times.
Hi Allan,
Exactly, if we see our students doing anything that is unacceptable, it needs to addressed immediately.
Patricia
I look at it like this, I'm not there to make friends, I'm there to help educate my students. I will do so in the same manner I would like to be taught. However, if a students acts in a disrespectful manner I must address that behavior. I will still respect the student for being a human and coming to school. I must help the student to change their behavior.
Hi Anna,
Great points made! In my opinion respect means more than to simply be liked. Our students are not going to like us all the time.
Patricia
I don’t think that is even a question; it is given in classroom setting since we’re not only educators but motivators, role models, advisors, whatnot.
We all want to be liked-that’s a human nature and I made my peace with it. However, I have to figure out what is more important to me since being liked is pretty much going with the flow, while being respected takes some courage and making tough choices.
I personally take respect over liking.
Hi Laura,
I concur! I like to treat every scenario that I can as if the student is in the workplace. We have to get students to see everything while in school from a professional perspective.
Patricia
I agree. I give my students the idea they are already in their profession. They are simply learning more about it. If you want them to believe that idea, you have to give them the same respect you would get in the work enviroment.
Hi Evelyn,
I concur! We must treat our students the way we want to be treated.
