Hi Terrell,
Absolutely, and we must be the best EDUTAINER around. Students want to be entertained by learning the subject matter.
Patricia

Hi Vernise,
What an impressive list to establish a positive instructor image. I can tell you serve as great role model for your students by utilizing this list. I have found that as long as you follow this list and maintain professionalism as well as have knowledge of the subject matter, students regard you as one of the best instructors.
Patricia

Steps I can take to create a postive instructor image are:

1) Starting and ending class on time
2) Be prepared and organized for each class
3) Have enough materials for all students
4) Stay in control of the class
5) Share # of years of experience in field
6) Show respect for all students
7) Establish academic rapport with each student

Instructors have to be professional, precise, and prepared. We are on stage every day.

Hi Betty,
A positive image sets the stage for all. Students need someone they can emulate professionally.
Patricia

Hi Anita,
Your students want to and need to know that you have great self confidence and is very knowledgeable with the subject. Students are looking for a first-rate performance from their instructors.
Patricia

It is important to create a positive instructor image the first day of class.

Some steps to take include the following:

Display positive image to students at all times;

Show genuine concern and interest for student concerns;

Manage classrom to minimize disruption; and

Minizing weakness in classroom and never show your inability to perform

Creating a positive image sets the stage for a sucessful class.

Hi Ashley,
Nicely stated! Yes, you are on point!
Patricia

You must look professional, be organized, be respectful, be fair, and present your material in a structured and organized fashion.

Hi Michelle,
I like your outlook on this! As educators we need to lead by example, simply by practicing what we preach!
Patricia

Hi Lisa,
None of us know it all. Students need to know that we do as we promise.
Patricia

I introduce myself by describing some of my experience that is relevant to the class I am teaching. I explain my class expectations and let teh studetns know that I am committed to them and their success. One of the best ways I have found is to always be prepared and honest. If I don't know something I admit it and then make a promise to get the information. I then follow through, which shows the students I am trustworthy and committed.

Always look professional. Organization (mise en place). Speak as a professional instructor, not a professional chef (we commonly use foul language in the "real world").

I always present my self as I want my students to present themselves. I teach by being an example as a professional

Hi Laura,
Absolutely! You look the part. Students have someone to look up to.
Patrica

Hi Gretchen,
I concur! My students label me as being strict, caring, professional, knowledgeable, and approachable. I'll take this label all day long!
Patricia

I have found that as a Chef-Instructor that by wearing a professionally pressed uniform and apron is tantamount to creating a positive instructor image. I am modelling future behavior for my students as well as giving them a very tangible example of professionalism.

Leading by example, following the expectations you set for the students is very important. I also think being strict with classroom management, but also showing compassion for the students is also key.

Definitely being organized and show confidence in what you are teaching. I work in the cosmetology field so it is also important to look the part by being fashionable, have hair, nails and makeup always looking good. And also to be a role model. Students will mimick the things you do so always do things the way you want your students to do it.
