Hi Allen,
I like your thought process on a professional apperance. Students certainly need role models to look up to in order to learn how to be successful.
Patricia
Hi Sheryl,
Oragnization is the key to success. Students can tell when you are unorganized, and you will lose credibility as an instructor that is hard to regain.
Patricia
I create a positive instructor image by wearing a shirt and tie for every class. Professional career minded students need professional instructors to lead them down that path of success.
Maintaining a high level of expertise gives the instructor the ability to assist any student with, what they think, is a monumental problem.
Being organized goes a long way in instilling a professional image among students.
I think the best step is organization - this shows the student that the instructor is skilled in the course and ready to teach.
I feel that being prepared for each and every class before the students are present sets a great tone for the class. They know you are just as ready as they are. I take that opportunity to discuss what we have been doing and what we are going to be doing with them rather than being hidden up at the front of the class preparing for the day. Another way is look as professional as possible, as I teach in a culinary school it is very important to be clean shaven, clothes ironed and pressed, full uniform, etc... Basically mimic the expectations you expect from them.
Hi Kimberly,
We need to always show our students what professional behavior is all about. They look up to us in more ways than one.
Patricia
being professionally dressed and prepared for class. this shows that you take pride in what you do and gives the students something they can model after. also being approachable for students who hav questions or concerns.
Hi Marina,
I concur! The perfect mixture for learning is to have fun while learning is taking place.
Patricia
Hi John,
It is obvious you know the role of a professional. Thank you for being a role model for our students.
Patricia
I would implement the following steps to creating a positive instructor image:
1. Provide a syllabus that completely explains the course expectations and procedures. Explain the syllabus during the first class.
2. Define the background and professional experience of the instructor to the students.
3. Take the time to learn some information about each student in order to establish a rapport with them.
4. Use a variety of instructional techniques to make each class interesting.
5. Treat all students equally while handling the special needs of each.
Don't take on more than you can handle too soon, especially if your goal is something outside your knowledge or current ability.
Learning should be an enjoyable experience. By making each lesson a pleasurable experience for the student ' the instructor can maintain a high level of student motivation. This does not mean the instructor must make things easy for the student or sacrifice standards of performance to please the student. The student will experience satisfaction from doing a good job or from successfully meeting the challenge of a difficult task.
Hi Daniel,
Students like knowing that they are learning from an experienced and knowledgeable instructor. This makes them feel more at ease and that they are getting their money's worth.
Patricia
Expalin experiences and knowledge, while creating a rapport as a former student and understanding of real-life issues as the deal with
Hi Eric,
You are on point! You just said everything that I do. Students should feel that they matter, and they really do. We can be friendly, smile, and approachable yet maintain professionalism.
Patricia
I think this is an easy concept. If have a friendly personality, this image is even easily to create.
Week one in a new class, get to know everyone's name as quickly as possible. Ask each student to introduce themselves and say a couple things about themselves. Obviously this can ony be done is the class is small and time permits for this activity.
ALWAYS say hello to all your students in the halls of your building. By simply smiling, saying hello and repeating their names, students will quickly realize that you know them and care about their progress in the program.
Students will then become confortable with you and be more productive.
Hi Dorothy,
I like your idea of leading by example and your great positive attitude. I know these things are contagious to your students.
Patricia
I always make it a point to separate my personal issues with my class. I literally tell my class "let's stay positive!" especially before an exam. I always tell them they can do it! Also, I practice what I teach. If I tell them infection control is vital in our field, I make sure I am the first one to follow infection control policies.
Hi Jim,
You are on point! We must lead by example, and we must let our students know that we are there for them.
Patricia
As an instructor it is critical to look, act and dress the part of a professional. It is also important to let your students know that you are approachable with any concerns that they may have.
Besides being prepared and dressing professional, I alway memorize my roster names. I then can focus on noting some memory tip to help me remember each student by the next class.
