As discussed, students do not want a friend. They want a competent professional to motivate them to learn. By not creating a professional distance from students, you can lose their respect and damage the learning environment.
Hi John,
Yes, I do. I feel the instructor's dress standards should be a step above the student's. Anyone should be able to walk into the classroom and know who the instructor is based on dress alone.
Patricia
Hi Dan,
What do you do to keep a professional image?
Patricia
maintains the proper relationship
You must hold your class to a certin standard, of
professaily
Do you think an instructor must wear a tie? I teach a trades program and just dont see the need for it.
Hi Carol,
You have to give your students something to look forward to. We have to know how to be the best salespeople in the building because we have to sell them every day on coming back the next day.
Patricia
Hi Anna,
Yes it is! Our actions, appearance, attitude, etc. speak just as loud as words.
Patricia
Hi Elizabeth,
Yes, yes, yes! We must practice what we preach.
Patricia
Hi Barbara,
Yes we are, and we must lead by example.
Patricia
Hi Richard,
Students must know that you are in charge, and image plays in vital role when it comes to authority.
Patricia
It helps to estblish who is in charge.
It allows the student to know that they should not cross certain boundaries. It allows the student to know that the instructor is the authority and that their roles are not equal to the students'.
We are role models for our students.
Role Model, Role Model, Role Model
We cannot expect a person to behave in a manner in which we cannot demonstrate.
Maintaining a professional image is so important in the creating a professional rapport between a student and instructor. The way you look, and speak affect the information you deliver and is just as important in the development of the classroom dynamic.
Hi Anthony,
You're right the classroom is not a place to discuss personal issues, it should be kept strictly professional.
Patricia
Hi Marita,
You're right! It is the way you carry yourself based on how students will see you.
Patricia
I feel that this is very important especially with the younger generation. The instructor is a measure of how to dress and act as a professional in their field. Having a good role model will allow students to mimic their instructors when out doing the externship and can promote positive outlook on the instructor and the school.
I see this as similar to parenting. While in class (or raising your children) it is not appropriate to be their friend. There may be time for that at a later date, but not during the teaching/mentoring phase of your relationship. Friendship can undermine learning by creating awkward situations when correction is needed.
