Hi Richard,
What do you do to exemplify a professional image?
Patricia
Hi Cemal,
You are right! As instructors, we must practice what we preach. Students need to see what professionalism is all about, and the vision starts with the instructor.
Patricia
it gives the the routine of a shop where they have a boss and not a friend however they do respect you better
Maintaining professionalism, being friends and showing respect are not conflicting situations for the class environment, they can coexist quite well and help students during their learning process.
Hi Aimee,
Respect is everything. Students will not give you the same level of respect if they regard you as one of their buddies. Do not allow students to cross that line.
Patricia
Hi Lacy,
Absolutely! Respect is everything. If you are regarded as their friend, they will NOT give you the same level of respect.
Patricia
That is the only way you can help students during their learning process. You need to lead by example, being professional will lead to being respected by your students.
So the class will function properly
Maintaining a professional distance from students is an important part of class management because an instructor needs to establish control in the classroom. The instructor is responsible for providing students with the education and training needed to successfully complete the course that he/she is teaching. Trying to be a friend to the students or being unorganized results in losing control of the class. A further consequence could be that students don’t learn the required course materials. Therefore, maintaining a professional distance is one of the first steps in classroom management and student success.
Students will tend to respect an instructor that is not their "buddy".
I also think that being friends with students can lead to situations that can be very hard to manage, such as a dispute over grades or favortism.
The whole class would pick up on this and then you have lost the respect of all of them.
Once you cross the line into them seeing you as a friend or a peer, and not their instructor, its hard or impossible to go back. You have to maintain the respect you so dearly work for in your class.
Hi Guy,
Once students learn that you do not stick to your guns, they will try you and will take advantage of you.
Patricia
Hi Danielle,
In what ways do you maintain a professional image?
Patricia
Professionalism is a key ingredient in being considered for opportunities in food service.
It is not simply a word but a set of codes by which we hold ourselves. It is the demeanor we adopt that allows us to project comptency, ability, sincerity, and integrity.
We are the end product to which our customers(Students)assess, compare , and strive to be. We are the benchmark.
It has no boundaries, it must be first and foremost in our minds. Just look at some of the "so called" professionals that have recently made the news. Tiger Woods, Jesse James, and any number of political figures.
These are perfect examples of a brand gone bad.
Examples of what were once conisidered professional.
To maintain a professional image, one must participate in some tens of activities, for a professional image can be lost in one mere slip!
First and foremost, always maintain a professional appearance. Follow the dress code for your institution.
Next, be on time. If you expect students to arrive on time, do so yourself!
Thirdly, be consistent with your dictates/class rules. Do not deviate haphazardly. If you must deviate from a previously expressed plan of action, be sure to share your rationale for such moves, such changes.
These three aspects, I beleive, should appear at the beginning of any such listing.
You want your students to respect you.
Hi Michele,
Yes! Students watch us closely, and a lot will definitely imitate what they see.
Patricia
Hi Geneveva,
You're right! Definitely not the atmosphere you want to create for learning. Students need to stay in their place, while the instructor stays in their place. We are teaching to educate the student not to befriend them.
Patricia
Hi Gregory,
Keep the two separate. Instructors should not befriend students. This causes way too many problems.
Patricia
Hi Neelam,
Very constructive feedback from your students. Students really are observant.
