Hi Joyce,
I agree! The students must know who is in charge. It is the instructor's responsibility to have standards higher for themselves than that of the student so that it is no mistaken as to who is in control.

I have found that in greeting my class with a smile each morning, keeping a possitive learning environment and making myself availabe to my students. My Student are now taking personaly when I do what I have always done which is inforce schools policies and share knowledge that have with them.

Maintaining a professional image and distance helps the instructor establish their authority over the student body that should not be diminished or undermined by becoming too friendly with the student. The instructor has to be in control at all times in order for the student to respect them and for the student to learn appropriately.

Maintaining a professional image is a boost in gaining student respect. The students expect the instructor to be a professional and to act accordingly.

being a student friend is not acceptibe they pay for us to teach not to be there friend but we should be there mentor and guidence

u dont want to fall in their trap and u will loose their trust and i alway tell my class i am here for them if u need to talk iam here

You are there to be a educator, mentor and a resource to them, not a friend. If you cross the line of teacher/ friend, you lose their respect. The students are there for an education.

Professional distance should always be active, students should not even know your first name as an instructor, you should be referenced as Mr/Mrs./Ms.... This teaches the student respect and authority. Some students have never learned the correct manner when adressiong your superior or elder.

As instructors we need to maintain a professional and respected image to our students who should see us as role models rather than friends.

Instructors need to maintain a professional image at all times in order to reflect to their students their competence, confidence, and characteristics.

They came to your school to learn and not just socialize. You lose their respect and you dont represent that level of expertize they are hoping for.

It is important to maintain a professional distance from studetns because if you get too personal it might look to other students that you are friends with theses particular students and that you are giving them their grade vs. them earning their grade.

Hi Lynn,
Leading by example is the example our students need to see from us as their instructor.

Hi Gwen,
We should want our students to emulate us professionally.
Patricia

We are here to teach them and show them the "image" of what someone in our profession looks like. It is up to us to set a positive example and hold them accountable.

Mr mantra is to treat others the way you want to be treated! So I act as a role model for the students and treat them with respect. I also try to point out the relevance of what they are learning to the "real world". In that way I can give examples that I have experienced to show them it is important to understand this concept or acquire this particular skill.

You risk losing the respect of the student, lack of professionalism, and the student may feel they have an edge over every other student if they say they are buddies with you.

Professional distance helps keep the student body from feeling there are any favorites.

Maintianing a professional image is imperitive as an instructor. It can be easily misconstrued if you get too personal or become friends, with grades involved.
